Romney lists potential running mates

By JIM DAVENPORT, Associated Press Writer

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Thursday dropped some names of potential running mates in the 2008 race, but added such speculation is a bit premature.

Among those Romney mentioned for the second slot on the Republican ticket were three Southerners: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

"There's some wonderful people right here in this state, as you know, Governor Sanford being one of them," the former Massachusetts governor said to a round of applause after being asked about vice presidential picks by a member of a crowd of about 400 people gathered for his campaign stop in this early voting state.

"I have to be honest with you, I haven't given a lot of thought to that, so I don't want to put any names in that hat right now," Romney said, but also gave a nod to Bush, calling him "quite a guy."

3. Since this clown has zero chance of being president, it doesn't matter anyway
I mean, Newt Gingrich as a potential running mate?!? All that hair gel must be crushing his brain.

5. I think Mitt should select Ken Lay, assuming Ken Lay is alive and in
hiding somewhere.

Or he should pick Elvis Presley, assuming Elvis Presley is alive and in hiding somewhere.

Or possibly Jim Morrison, same scenario. I actually know a woman in NYC who insists that Jim Morrison is not only alive, but that she KNOWS him and where he is. I have my doubts, and try to change the subject whenever it's brought up, but in the present case, I think Mitt Romney and THE LIZARD KING would be an attractive ticket. Phyllis Schlafly would love it.

There you go, Mitt. Three more recommendations for veep. No charge.

Edited on Thu Mar-29-07 06:56 PM by mvd
just like they did with Bush. Won't work, especially with names like Gingrich and Jeb Bush. I'm not scared of any of their candidates/potential candidates except for maybe Fred Thompson. He's a Southerner who could fool people.

13. his problem, though, is that he in fact used to be "moderate"...
Edited on Thu Mar-29-07 07:50 PM by progdonkey
When he was running against Ted Kennedy in the mid-90s (94?), he tried to appear more liberal than Kennedy on all the big issues: pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-gun control, etc. Now, he's completely 180 on those (he's been a "lifelong" member of the NRA for about a month), and even the right wingers aren't buying it.

He and Giuliani have the same problem: they positioned themselves as (comparatively) ultra-liberal Republicans to get elected in blue states, but who now need to appear to be Kool-Aid drinking movement conservatives. At least Giuliani still has a small bit of residual glow from 9/11, but even that's fast disappearing.

Neither of them will be the Republican candidate: neither liberals nor conservatives like candidates who change their positions on the fly to suit the prevailing political winds. That's also why McCain is dead in the water. Brownback and Tancredo have a good chance with the base, I think, but will all but guarantee a Dem landslide, because they're both so batshit insane (ie. representative of the Republican base). The media's getting people worked up over the supposed bad blood between the Obama and Hillary campaigns, but it's the Republican primaries that will hold the most entertainment for Dems and panic for Republicans. ;-)

9. Linda Tripp would be a good selection as well. I think she'd be a
natural out there on the stump and a big boost to Mitt's campaign.

And by god, let's not forget Harriet Miers. She isn't doing anything these days, is she? Well, maybe she'll be going to jail, pending the outcome of the Department of Justice investigation. But barring that, she'd be really something.

11. Seems To Me That This Is Enough Reason For Repugs To Not Support Him.....
really - how long does he think he'll be the president with Jeb as the VP. Not a smart move if you want to stay alive. If he did pick Jeb - Mitt should have a food tester and a lot of bodyguards. Remember Mitt - Jeb is only a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Don't do this to us - one Bush not elected by the people is enough.

14. If anyone's interested, I'm choosing Sen. Brownback to be my running mate
when I win the Republican nomination.

This should also be newsworthy, since I stand a greater chance of winning the nomination than does Romney.

15. I'm tempted to say Romney has no chance, but I honestly cannot figure out
what Republican does have a chance. Every time I try to argue for one of them winning the primary, I can't see it. Giuliani has pissed off Fundies too much, Romney has pissed off Fundies too much, McCain... you know. Then you get to Huckabee and Gingrich and the little laugher candidates, and they can make only the Fundies happy. I have no idea who will emerge on their side. Whoever it is will be a compromise candidate like Dole, except without the charm.

Fred Thompson is an idiot if he stays out. He's about the only one who worries me at all.

17. Yeah, go ahead Mitt.

Anyone else with any smarts wants to avoid the Boosh family like the plague. But you know better, don't you. I can see your hopes taking a downward spiral already. And as for Newt. Are you trying to appeal to the 'sleaze' crowd?

This guy must be desperate. He's scraping the bottom of the rethuglican barrel. So for that reason I wish him all the success in the world.

Not either of those guys, though, and probably not some loon like Dornan. I could see him choosing Santorum, if Santorum was from the south. Or, he could pick a female like Kay BH of Texas, or Condi Rice, to make a statement about gender and/or race.

22. There are so many people who'd be perfect to run with Romney.
George Foreman -- the ex-boxer and cheeseburger grill guy;

Red Schoendienst -- veteran St. Louis Cardinals eminence;

and

David Duke -- Klan figure and sometimes politician

--to name just three more.

good to get out of the house once and while.

You know, hit the rubber chicken circuit. Mix it up with the NASCAR crowd in Bakersfield and Florence.

Dennis Miller was made for that kind of thing.

That's what I take from this. He just wants to let them know that he is going to make the base happy and let them have a losing VP candidate on the ticket.

I don't know what Sanford's vice is, but Bush is too meddlesome and sanctimonious, and Gingrich is combative and unpleasant. I suspect all of them are self-righteous and vainglorious. It's a virtual festival of vice!
