The battle of wills between Britain and Iran is intensifying, a week after 15 UK military personnel were taken captive.

Shortly after midnight, the Foreign Office said the British Embassy had received a note from the Iranian government, although a spokeswoman refused to reveal the note's contents.

She said: "We can confirm that, as reported in the Iranian media, the Iranian government has sent a formal note to the British Embassy.

"Such exchanges are always confidential so we cannot divulge any details but we are giving the message serious consideration and will soon respond formally to the Iranian government."
