Panel Asks Rove for Information on '08 Election Presentation

By Scott Higham and Robert O'Harrow Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, March 30, 2007; Page A05

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee sought more information yesterday about a presentation by a White House aide given to political appointees at the General Services Administration that discussed targeting 20 Democratic congressional candidates in the next election.

In a letter to White House political affairs director Karl Rove, the committee chairman, Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), asked about the Jan. 26 videoconference by Rove deputy J. Scott Jennings, which was directed to the chief of the GSA and as many as 40 agency officials stationed around the country.

Jennings's 28-page presentation included 2006 election results and listed the names of Democratic candidates considered beatable and Republican lawmakers thought to need help. At a hearing Wednesday about the GSA, Waxman said the presentation and follow-up remarks allegedly made by agency chief Lurita Alexis Doan may have violated the Hatch Act, a law that restricts federal agencies and employees from using their positions for political purposes.

In yesterday's letter, Waxman asked Rove who prepared the presentation and whether Rove or Jennings consulted with anyone about whether it might be in violation of the Hatch Act. Waxman also asked whether Rove or any members of his staff have given the same or similar PowerPoint presentations to political appointees at other government agencies.

2. I just realized this is the woman Randi R. was having a fit about:

The PowerPoint presentation was a focus of Waxman's hearing Wednesday into Doan's 10-month tenure and into allegations that she has acted inappropriately. Doan denied the allegations at the hearing.

Six political appointees at the GSA who participated in the videoconference said Doan asked at the conclusion how the agency could help GOP candidates win in the next elections, according to a letter Waxman sent to Doan.

During the hearing, Doan said at least 10 times that she does not recall asking employees to help the GOP or does not recall details about the presentation.

The matter is being investigated by the independent Office of Special Counsel.

That's why all these poor Republicans need government jobs. In the business world, having a "bad memory" is enough to get you fired.

She reminded me of Kyle Sampson! "I don't know" what happened in my own department and "I'll accept your characterization of the slide..." when it's quite obvious what the slide says??? A what's with the "How can the GSA help the Republicans in 2008?" She claims she doesn't remember saying that, yet it is reported by two of her staffers?

And what's with the "guys?" Do we now refer to members of a House committee as "guys?"

These scandals have been a real eye-opener!

edited for spelling

9. Watch the video of Doan
Braley hands her slide after slide from Jennings' presentation, and Doan sits there like a stubborn four-year-old, insisting over and over again that the plain language of the slides (targeting House and Senate races, and rating the chances of Republicans winning various congressional seats around the country) is too obscure for her to comment on what they could possibly mean. When Braley presses her on what other possible interpretation Doan has, she just shrugs and says "I'll accept your characterization."

The humane thing to do would have been to have her dispatched like a horse that broke down in the Old West.

10. Usually they have federal observers to monitor elections
I think there should be election observers to monitor Bush, Rove, Gonzales and the rest of the gang in 2008.

11. Contact the fraud dept GSA to report a fraud
fraudnet@gsa.gov

I wish to report fraud in the United States government

Specifically, Lurita Doan.

She is a liar! She is a crook! She should go to prison!

She is a shining example of how the GSA is doing the right thing. NOT!

12. during the hearing she kept saying "I'll accept your interpretation...:
in a way to express frustration ala I can't remember but I can't offer any other explanation and will instead give a quasi-acknowledgement ala using the word "interpretation". The Congressman from Iowa kept calling her on that response with the question: "How else could this be interpretted?"

She is toast.

I would bet dollars to donuts other similar such meetings have been held at other agencies - and I hope this is just the tip of the iceberg of demasking that bushco has tried to turn the federal government into a political operation rather than an institution for governing.

13. It's all about the RNC email accounts
This needs to be investigated.

In both this GSA scandal and the USA scandal, we've seen White house office using RNC email addresses for the "dirty" work.

I can't help but wonder....what else is to be had regarding these scandals and others. They are subverting laws at every turn.

RNC Email Addresses. Drain the swamp.

16. why is rove even allowed to contact government agencies at all??????
isn't Rove just a political appointee to * for political reasons only??

why is he sitting in the white house at all??

why does he have security clearences??

What gives him any right to have a "Deputy" Jennings ??

How is he able to have any deputy contact GSA??

Remember before Doan how many bad reports came out about this administration from the GSA?? am i the only one that remembers how many bad reports came out about the * administration?? no wonder they had a "F" report card..the fuckers in this white house didn't like it one bit..in fact the msm played down all the bad reports..if they covvered them at all!! and the msm didn't report the reports hardly at all , i know becuase i was sending out the reports to all my internet groups..trying to be the media on these reports!!

soooo now rove has his lackey in the position ( agency Chief Doan ) to use the GSA for political purposes..i want to know who authorized him to have any contact with GSA or any department in our govwernment in his designated political position..if Rove wasn't authorized by anyone above him ( ie. little lord pissy pants)..did he also break the law in his interference and contact in any government agencies he contacted and sent his so call deputy to manipulate??

..of this pathetic lying idiot, to see a perfect example of just how arrogant these republican manipulators are. Karl Rove has turned the politics of this country into a sick, twisted game, and hes got to be stopped sooner, rather than later.

18. Violations of the Hatch Act
It was held at and on GSA facilities. VIOLATION!
Even though it was supposedly held at lunch time it was held during working hours. VIOLATION!
It was presented as a video conference utilizing government resources. VIOLATION!
The content of the presentation was 100% political and was not a function of GSA. VIOLATION!
