U.S. Carrier Nimitz to Deploy to Persian Gulf
Source: AFP/Defensenews

Nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz will sail April 2 to support U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. Navy said, amid a spike in tensions over Iran’s seizure of 15 British marines and sailors.

The Nimitz, and its battle group of destroyers and guided-missile cruisers, will relieve the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, which this week took part in war games exercises in the Gulf with another carrier, John C. Stennis.

The new battle group will be in position by late April, but there will be no overlap with the Eisenhower, and the number of U.S. carriers in the area would stay at two, a navy official said on condition of anonymity.

"If anything, there would be a point where there is only one in the region," the official said, on condition of anonymity.

I thought it was due March 2006? On the other hand, if it happens, it will be bad. I am tired also of predictions.

15. It WILL happen
Might not be today, tomorrow, next week, or next month - but it will happen one of these days. The neocons are always talking about how we have to "take care" of Iran eventually. And I don't see how Israel is going to sit idly by while Iran continues with their nuclear work.

Whether the slight was imagined or not?

24. Maybe you haven't been keeping up with current events.
But the U.S. seized their diplomats in Iraq, and now they have some Royal Marines they want to put on a show trial.

These things sometimes lead to a war.

35. Lol! Don't You Know That
there's always a first time for everything?
Just because there's been no Iran invasion yet - then you think that must mean it will never happen?
Lol! Where's the logic in that?

11. Yes, according to this report from Channel 10 News (San Diego)...
...it's replacing the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Of course, if a "shootin' war" were to start...

And according to this, the Nimitz will be patrolling near the Horn of Africa (a.k.a. the Arabian Sea), which is also near Southern Iran.

USS Nimitz Scheduled To Depart For Persian Gulf

Ship To Join Another Local Aircraft Carrier

POSTED: 12:05 pm PDT March 28, 2007
UPDATED: 12:22 pm PDT March 28, 2007

SAN DIEGO -- The USS Nimitz and its support ships will depart San Diego on Monday for the Persian Gulf to join another local aircraft carrier strike group already in the region, military officials said.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will join the San Diego-based John C. Stennis Strike Group and relieve the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, according to Naval Air Forces Public Affairs.

Military officials said in a statement that the two-carrier presence in the Persian Gulf area is intended to demonstrate the country's "resolve to build regional security and bring long-term stability to the region."

16. Question: How long will they overlap?
If there are three carriers in the Gulf for a week, sounds like a good time for the initial overpowering wave of carrier airstrikes.

3. This actually makes complete normal sense. (For a change)
The Eisenhower has been at sea quite some time and was always going to require relief at some point soon. I'm not sure I believe the part about the no overlap but, the Eisenhower does legitimately need to be relieved. At some point men are run ragged and the chances of accidents go way up.

12. I don't know if the word "normal" applies in Bushworld
I have seen things I never thought I would - stolen elections, invasion, torture, detention without trial...

A fresh war would be quite normal, by the standards of the day.

4. How much you want to bet the Eisenhower is under orders to leave at a leisurely pace?
That way, it won't be so far when it has to turn around and go back.

I really wonder if the Iranians are as nuts as Bush is. Don't they know he'll drop nukes on them if he gets the chance? He won't fool around this time, he'll make a parking lot out of Iran and worry about the consequences later.

Face it, we don't have the troops for another war in another country. Nukes will be the only option. He'll wipe Iran off the map. Talk about shock and awe!

We so need to get this lunatic out of the White House.

7. Neither have I.
Congress is making inroads toward stopping him, but I fear it will take too long.

I keep hearing rumors that the first week of April will be it for Iran.

Rumors are just rumors, and we've heard this one before, but I always fear I'm going to wake up some morning and see a story unfold on the morning news that I don't want to see. By then, of course, it will be too late for Congress to do anything.

I understand your bias. It's natural in those circumstances.

But just imagine what our society could be like if we spent that 3/4 of a trillion dollars a year on things that helped the citizens, not just a few very rich leaders of military suppliers.

Like universal healthcare, universal education thru college, publicly funded elections to remove the influence of corporations from politics, etc.

Of course, we both know this will never happen here, barring the next revolution.

38. There is little Georgie, playing with his toy soldiers, ships and tanks
making sure that he uses the right sound effect for each toy, plotting, planning and playing some more.

I just saw Darth Cheney yell at the democrats and threaten them, "If they imagine that George will give on this issue, they don't know the George W. bush that I know." or some such crap, and it struck me that these people are not delusional. Rather, they are evil. unmitigated evil.
