Clinton Breaks With Husband's Legacy on Nafta Pact, China Trade

Kristin Jensen and Mark Drajem Fri Mar 30, 12:26 AM ET

March 30 (Bloomberg) -- One of President Bill Clinton's enduring legacies was his hard-fought push for trade deals with Mexico and China. His wife is heading in another direction.

Senator Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, wonders why the North American Free Trade Agreement is ``continuing to drive hundreds of thousands, even millions, of people from Mexico into our country,'' she said in an interview. ``We just can't keep doing what we did in the 20th century.''

Somewhere along the Clintons' ``bridge to the 21st century'' -- their 1996 campaign mantra -- they parted ways on trade. Bill was a champion of the global economy and prodded Congress to approve Nafta in 1993 and China's entry into the
World Trade Organization in 2001. Hillary, 59, says new deals may need to be put on hold pending a review -- an idea she calls ``a little timeout.''

Comments like that align her with union members and anti- globalization activists who say U.S. jobs are being sacrificed in the name of free trade. Clinton has expanded her circle of advisers beyond pro-trade associates such as former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, 68, and Deputy Secretary Roger Altman, 60, her top economic adviser, to include AFL-CIO officials and other free-trade critics.

3. That's Why She Voted For Permanent 'Normalization' Of Trade With China
Because outsourcing jobs to China is totally different.

Totally.

21. since that vote took place before she was in office
I don't understand how you arrived at the conclusion that she voted for it.

btw - the measure passed 83-15, with only 3 Democrats voting against it.

so spread the love...

25. yes.
There are a number of people on this board who continually post misinformation (that's the polite word for it) about HRC's voting record and position's on issues.

I wonder why they would do that?

2. Yeah, I remember Bill's reservations, too
They seemed to oddly coincide with him needing labor political backing. Hillary's are following a similar pattern. I wonder what that could be.

6. Some might even calls his "concerns" a lie, later proven when he dropped them once in office.
I'd be one of them - unless he just couldn't stand up and caved instead.

7. We caught bin Laden!
See how easy it is to SAY something?

I prefer actions. Like introducing bills NOW to repeal NAFTA/CAFTA - not vague future promises.

Until then, color me guarded.

10. "Hillary, 59"
Also "Robert Rubin, 68" and "Roger Altman, 60."

It's curious why they put the people's ages in there. I didn't see any age for "Bill" in the piece.

11. Utter BULLSHIT, coming from she, who sat on the board of WALMART for 6 years.
Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 02:41 AM by BeHereNow
Last time I checked, she was attending the Trilateral Commission and Council on Foreign Relations
Fuck-America festivals too.

Wake up people.
Please do your research and understand the structure of global power
and the "One World Order" doctrine executed by elites on BOTH sides
of the aisle...
If you have not studied the Trilateral Commission reports, then
you can not begin to comprehend or understand the charade that is
currently unfolding.

the world's major union buster and health care benefit denier.

Trilateral Commission? - I read about their ideas - guess I am one of them too.

Council on Foreign Relations? - likewise I read about their ideas - I wonder if I'm not who I think and say I am.

Granted I am not right wing rich and corporate and the two organizations do seem bent in that direction, but one should note that Trilateral was formed with liberal Brookings Institution members back in the 70's, and that of the staff/members of the Council on Foreign Relations there are some heavy hitters that are hard to view as lock step right wing - like

Leslie H. Gelb, Pulitzer Prize-winner, former correspondent for the New York Times
Lee Feinstein of Clinton Defense and State Department
Gary Samore, Former Senior Director for Non-Proliferation at the National Security Council
Caroline Atkinson of the Finance area of the Washington Post.
Peter Beinart - U.S. Foreign Policy expert and author of "The Good Fight: Why Liberals--And Only Liberals--Can Win the War on Terror and Make America Great Again"
Roger M. Kubarych, Former Chief Economist at the New York Stock Exchange
Princeton N. Lyman, Former U.S. Ambassador to South Africa and Nigeria, directed the Council-sponsored Task Force More Than Humanitarianism: A Strategic U.S. Approach Toward Africa.

Besides - what does "attend their meetings mean -which meeting - did she say anything - any papers - or was she just seen near the room where the meeting took place?

12. I notice the article makes no mention of THIS little 2005 tidbit -

So NAFTA and China job trade are now bad, but there's no recant on the Great American Job Exodus to India. OK.

``The simple fact is, nations with free-market systems do better,'' she said in a 1997 speech to the Corporate Council on Africa. ``Look around the globe: Those nations which have lowered trade barriers are prospering more than those that have not.''

Uh, NO. Your key word is "nations". That doesn't necessarily mean "people OF those nations", as the workers of all nations involved are getting either implicitly surgeoned or unemployed altogether. You know, why can't these politicians just admit that corporations and the wealthy elite, not people, run this country? It'd be a lot simpler and honest than waffling and lying when you realize your stance will cost you votes.

14. Why are Hill's ideas immediately suspect on DU? She is a smart
woman and politician and can judge independently whether the Bill plan has been successful or no. Bill might not like the results now himself.

Just fodder for the so-called "undecided" leaning toward the right.
