MELTDOWN

Sunday April 1,2007
By Stuart Winter

BABY seals are dying in the thousands as global warming turns the ice fields where they are born into a watery wasteland.

Thousands of baby seal are perishing as high temperatures break the ice into millions of tiny pieces, hurling the youngsters into the treacherous seas.

Unlike the parent animals with their coats of thick, insulating blubber, the cubs cannot swim and have no way of staving off the bone-chilling cold of the late winter seas.

Once they slip into sea they quickly succumb to the cold and exhaustion.

But even if they are lucky - like the pitiful animal in our picture - and manage to scamble back on to the ice with their tiny flippers, an even more chilling fate awaits - a hunter’s club.

2. Poor little babies
Humans deserve what's coming, the animal kingdom doesn't. I hope enough of the "lower" species survive to enjoy seeing the back of humankind.

3. And yet, they'll still find reason to have the seal "hunt" this year.
Edited on Sun Apr-01-07 06:08 PM by flvegan
"Hunt" is in quotes just as it should have been in the article. These people aren't hunters, they simply beat animals to death.

Shameful.

On edit: Nomination number 5 coming up!

penguins due to less krill to feed on. There is less krill because there are fewer iceburgs for them to grow beneath. These penguins used to be 6 feet tall a million years ago, they believe. Now they are shorter than Danny Devito.

11. I thought scientists had looked to frongs as a sentinel species.
I guess the Chinstrap penguins and other krill-eating lifeforms should have been watched more carefully.

I don't know if the krill are dying off, but maybe there are alot less of them.

10. Maybe it would be fun to "hunt" some hunters...
I just can't see how any thinking, feeling, human being could engage in this shit. People who can freely walk the Earth like that should probably be exterminated, before the seals are.
