Breaking: CNN reports Ridge increasing threat level at 1:30pm
It just broke about 2 minutes ago. Will have link soon.

The lies about Saddam actual capture by the Kurds in the British papers, and Ridge magically appears and starts playing with colors again.

30. And dropping dollar, although I believe dropping is what they want, now
it can be blamed on terrorist threats and not the mess our economy is in. Funny how Fridays release of a threat came just as the dollar was heading up quickly to meet the 3 day high. Can't have that now! Each day has closed a bit lower than the day before since Sept 1.

Terrorists want to kill me? Fine - let them try.

Rightwingers want to shut me up? Fine - let them try.

I refuse to cower. They will never break me through fear. In the grand scheme of the universe, neither Bush not bin Laden have any power over me, because I refuse to allow them to. They are nothing without fear, and I won't play their game.

12. This time I think there could be a serious problem and I'll tell you why.
Despite all the lies from the Right Wingers, Al-Qaeda is probably in better shape now than it was before 9/11. Since the war in Afghanistan began Al-Qaeda has launched nearly two dozen attacks around the world stretching from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia to Morrocco. Funding and recruitment have increased from every report I have heard on mainstream media and my guess is that it is even worse than we are letting on.

Still, for all the lack of success we have had against them, we have painted a picture of Al-Qaeda as on the ropes as an effort to drive down recruitment because we are trying to make it seem like a lost cause. This is a good strategy if it was true and even if its false. It is for this reason that Al-Qaeda may try another massive attack somewhere against us to prove their relevance.

I wish it wasn't so, but the fact is we bungled an opportunity to deliver a knock out blow to Al-Qaeda when we decided to go into Iraq instead of finnishing Afghanistan and perhaps some operations in Paksitan.

50. wasn't "bungled" if Sy Hersh is right
I don't have the article bookmarked, because I read it in the hard copy, but if you read his article about our actions when we had bin Laden on three sides, you have to wonder...

specficically, Hersh notes that someone at the highest levels of command/govt had to issue the orders for our troops to stand down when they had bin Laden in the Tora Bora region...along with some of those nice ISI (secret Pakistani police) supporters of the Taliban/AlQ.

why did our govt allow Pakistan to fly out five thousand or so people from the area?

the only "rational" reason is so that Bush et al could justify an invasion of Iraq.

as in...if bin Laden were so close to capture, why not focus our attention on that battle? --and if he could be captured, would America be willing to invade Iraq?

even more than Bush flying the family members of the House of Saud out of this country, including members with known associations with funding for bin Laden, this moment in the "war on terror" warrants much investigation by reporters and by the watchdogs in our govt...assuming any exist anymore.

59. Treason.
If the allegations that bin Laden planned and directed 911 turn out to be true, then enabling his escape is treason - punishable by death, if I recall correctly.

If bin Laden was not behind 911, then treason probably occurred that day.

Take your pick, Bush. Either way, you're a fucking TRAITOR. If you disagree, stop stonewalling the 911 Commission.

79. related link (Sy Hersh: AQ allowed to evacuate from Afghanistan)

Jane Wallace interviews Seymour Hersh on PBS "NOW with Bill Moyers" (2/21/03)
http://www.pbs.org/now/transcript/transcript_hersh.html

excerpt follows :

-----

JANE WALLACE: Let's talk about Konduz. During the war with Afghanistan--

SY HERSH: Great story.

JANE WALLACE: -- you reported that during a key battle our side in that battle had the enemy surrounded. There were a reported perhaps 8,000 enemy forces in there.

SY HERSH: Maybe even more. But certainly minimum that many.

JANE WALLACE: It's your story, take it.

SY HERSH: Okay, the cream of the crop of Al Qaeda caught in a town called Konduz which is near ... it's one little village and it's a couple hundred kilometers, 150 miles from the border of Pakistan. And I learned this story frankly-- through very, very clandestine operatives we have in the Delta Force and other very... We were operating very heavily with a small number of men, three, 400 really in the first days of the war. And suddenly one night when they had everybody cornered in Konduz-- the special forces people were told there was a corridor that they could not fly in. There was a corridor sealed off to-- the United States military sealed off a corridor. And it was nobody could shoot anybody in this little lane that went from Konduz into Pakistan. And that's how I learned about it. I learned about it from a military guy who wanted to fly helicopters and kill people and couldn't do it that day.

JANE WALLACE: So, we had the enemy surrounded, the special forces guys are helping surround this enemy.

SY HERSH: They're whacking everybody they can whack that looks like a bad guy.

JANE WALLACE: And suddenly they're told to back off--

SY HERSH: From a certain area--

JANE WALLACE: -- and let planes fly out to Pakistan.

SY HERSH: There was about a three or four nights in which I can tell you maybe six, eight, 10, maybe 12 more-- or more heavily weighted-- Pakistani military planes flew out with an estimated-- no less than 2,500 maybe 3,000, maybe mmore. I've heard as many as four or 5,000. They were not only-- Al Qaeda but they were also-- you see the Pakistani ISI was-- the military advised us to the Taliban and Al Qaeda. There were dozens of senior Pakistani military officers including two generals who flew out. And I also learned after I wrote this story that maybe even some of Bin Laden's immediate family were flown out on the those evacuations. We allowed them to evacuate. We had an evacuation.

JANE WALLACE: How high up was that evacuation authorized?

SY HERSH: I am here to tell you it was authorized - Donald Rumsfeld who - we'll talk about what he said later - it had to be authorized at the White House. But certainly at the Secretary of Defense level.

107. High alert is probably right..
BUT, can the dirty deed really come to fruition. Maybe yes, maybe no..our "security" orgs. seem to not know their ass from a hole in the ground anyway.

It has been my feeling all along that abandoning Afghanistan was the worst thing we could have done. What we did there only moved the terrorist around and pissed off a few more. While we are busy destroying another country, the Al quacko and their subdivisions have been gleefully preparing something "special". They don't give a shit what we did in Iraq; they are not cowered by that. These guys are all over the world and hate us with a vengence. We caught Saddam? Woot big deal to OBL et al. They see we are on the ropes with our economy and running our military ragged all over the freaking globe. The game isn't over and BUSHTARD hasn't done one thing to make us safer.

You are right about Wolfie interrupting Kerry to remind him that the terror alert being increased, right after Kerrys spewed his crap about Dean saying that Saddam's capture did not make us safer.

BTW, setting politics aside for a moment, these security alerts only succeed in harming American businesses, at the height of the Holiday Season.

93. I thought the same thing, NWHarkness.
What a false sense of security they tried to instill in us after Iraq was invaded, yet people kept dying in attacks. What a lot of crowing was done after Saddam Hussein was caught, and now they're raising the terror alert level.

I'm torn as to how to react to this. Part of me is almost desensitized to the whole thing, rather like the villagers in "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." After all, we spent much of last winter on orange alert, if I recall correctly.

And part of me reads headlines about the threat rivaling or exceeding 9/11 and then wants to check to see that my affairs are in order. I did some especially desperate praying tonight at church.

May God raise up men and women of peace, and may they succeed in their mission.

look at this, though... Joint Chiefs Chairman Meyers said:

"And if they could use another catastrophic event, a tragedy like 9-11; if they could do that again, if they could get their hands on weapons of mass destruction and make it 10,000 (deaths), not 3,000, they would do that."

There is a section about Ari Fleischer that explains how he functions as the Press Secretary. Answering the question without answering the question. And he would challenge the reporter of having the correct facts, refuse to answer saying the question was hypothetical even when it wasn't, rephrase the question so that it couldn't be answered.

Just like Rush they rely on people not having the facts available. Without the facts they can't be challenged.

27. Does this even work anymore?
Everyone knows "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"...

If there is ever a legitimate (read: non-USG-sponsored) terrorist attack in the future, the Bushies' overuse of the "terror threat color wheel" ensures that a healthy loss of life due to lack of attention will result. People can only remain vigilant against an unseen threat that never materializes for so long.

Then again, maybe the BFEE are well aware of that. Perhaps they prefer that people dismiss every color-coded "threat" until one is actually carried out, so that the government can say, "See, we told you, but all those pesky rights were in the way, so now we have to do the martial law thing!"

:tinfoilhat: ?

My criterion for any rating system is, Does it prescribe any change of behavior?

If I read a movie review from a critic I respect, it will make me more or less likely to go see the movie based on the review. Hell, even the fire danger ratings in the summer might make me reconsider BBQing in a state park. But the terrorist warning system doesn't suggest anything I should do differently. Gee, should I drive a different route to work? By more batteries for my flashlight?

Give me an effin' break.

I need to listen to the local news more closely. Swear I heard them say that they were gonna be pulling over people like with "sobriety checkpoints" and searching their vehicles. "Allow 2 hours extra to your travel plans"...

WTF????

You pull ME over, you better call your wife and tell her to cancel dinner, because you ain't getting in until you show me a fuckin' WARRANT!!!
And you'd better be in good shape, because I'm gonna work some of those Krispy Kreams offa you if you try to pull me from my vehicle!

77. Pull you over to search your car?
Whatever happened to unreasonable search and seizure--oh wait--my mistake. That went by the wayside along with several other civil liberties in order to keep us safe.

But if we are now safer--why is the alert level at Orange--oh wait--they are desperate so the attacks are increasing.

But if the level of chatter indicates an attack is in the works then why did they ignore it the first time--oh wait--I guess we know better now. We've figured out that you don't have to have an exact itinerary to figure it out...

The contradictions just keep mounting. I have to admit, I just can't take it serously because I honestly think a second attack will weaken shrub.

What a Charlie Foxtrot this whole mess is.

That was my first thought. What a perfect way to prove, again, that they are "protecting" us. Now, they give us a warning, then stop something catastrophic seconds before it happens. Bush himself may wrestle a terrorist to the ground. It's gonna happen. These guys are masters. Bush learned a lot from Grampa Prescott's friends.

and the resulting effect they are hoping for is that everyone will feel safer because Homeland Security was able to thwart the attack.

But here's the kicker: THEY WILL ANNOUNCE THEY GOT THE TIP FROM THEIR INTERROGATION OF SADDAM, finally "proving" the link of SH to the terrorists, and thus getting their justification for the invasion.

It will be a two-for-one. People will conclude that the invasion was justified and that Homeland Security has been doing a good job. Bush's numbers will go up.

On edit: Make that a threefer - they will also "prove" Dean has been wrong about his assertion that SH's capture has not done anything to make us safer.

82. PROVING Dean's point about being no safer after Saddam capture...
While this color change may be a diversion from other issues, or even a legitimate cause for concern, it DOES undercut those who have criticized Dean for having the courage to say something TRUE, but unpopular..."We're no more safer after Saddam's capture than after 9/11".

Dean was right, and hopefully his statement will sink in to the American consciousness and demonstrate that he's wiser than many give him credit.

...not to mention Lieberman, Gephardt, and Kerry all look foolish for criticizing Dean on a remark that has been implicitly confirmed by today's terrorist threat level actions.

91. I think the regime just "fessed-up" to 9/11. Again. In a tangential way.
I was watching NBC Nightly News. Tom Ridge said, something to the effect, that not since 9/11 has the nation's risk of attack been so high. Tom, if the warnings were so prevalent leading up to 9/11, why weren't the airlines given timely security info? Why wasn't the public warned about the high threats to commercial air travel (like John Ashcroft obviously was)? Nevermind answering, Tom. I know the answer. LIHOP. Bastards. A good friend , a fellow airline captain, had his wife killed at the Pentagon crash. She was a flight attendent on the American Airlines B-757 that augered into the Pentagon.

Nevermind, also, that your credibility is zero, Tom. Maybe you have intelligence, maybe you don't. We have heard the cry of "Wolf!" too often. I might eat my words in a week or two. These are words that I never hope to eat ... bitter words, indeed. But I don't trust you bastards. Your "orange" has me seeing "red."

96. Ramblin' thoughts...
if the alert is concocted, perhaps it's timed to conincide with the deadline looming for the 9-11 victims - they have to decide if they are going to settle for the little handful of dollars that they government wants to pay them for their loved ones value - and sign away their privilege to raise their voice against the massacre.

On the other hand - they are giving Dean a reward - something they would never want to do otherwise

- unless, unless Dean is their man.

I've noticed that my straight forward approach to truth and expectations about truth went down the hole with this lying group of people? And it started with the Iran-Contra lie for me because they got away with it - and they keep trying to run a secret sub-government that is anti-citizen.

No it has to do with Bush's grinch complex and how he intends to restrict Santa from flying this year. The military is on high alert looking for this UFO and have been told to "bring him in dead or alive". You know how he is after all.

Ahhh... Perhaps these changing of colors is affecting the minds of normally reasonable people who used to debate facts and use logic. Bush is now using subliminal methods to cause democrats to begin ranting and raving like a bunch of lunatics. This will allow Bush to then throw us all into concentration camps and the HE WILL RULE THE WORLD!!!! HAAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA.....

108. They don't want to give Dean boost on security issue
An organized boost to Dean's campaign by neo-cons would be something that would increase Dean's standing in the Democratic Party base but continue to be a wedge issue among the center and right.

Examples would be having a flaming righty rant about how evil homosexuals are or have another judge throw another tacky 10 commandments statue in a public building. Dean could score among the party faithful, but the right wing base would get all excited for Dumbya, too.

Giving Dean more national security credibility is about the worst thing they could have done.

109. Will decrease Dean's negatives in polls
I'm kinda guessing to most visible effect will be to reduce dean's negatives.

Security isn't really an issue people choose candidates on. People don't love a candidate because of their security stands. It's more of an issue that people eliminate candidates on, and decide they can or can't tolerate that candidate. So people are left with a list of candidates they would and wouldn't feel safe with, and then choose a candidate to "love" from those candidates remaining on their "safe" list.
