Former Senator Fred Thompson in Remission for Lymphoma
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 08:49 AM by MaineDem
Source: Fox news

WASHINGTON — Former Tennessee Republican Sen. Fred Thompson says he's in remission from lymphoma.

Thompson, who is considering a run for the White House in 2008, says the illness is treatable.

"I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future—and with no debilitating side effects," Thompson said.

4. that's the difference between our party and theirs
the republic party is the one that says stuff like "Maybe she'll get hit by lightning before she takes her senate seat" Trent Lott about Mrs. Clinton after she won against Lazio in 2000.Oh yea and all the "morans" saying how the Dixie Chicks should be tied to a bomb and dropped over Baghdad-we democrats wish no ill on our opponents-I'm proud of that about us

3. Detaching myself for a moment from the realm of politics
I think Thompson should forget about running for President for his health's sake. That should be his top priority, not a campaign. And relative to Elizabeth Edwards - she's not running for president.

6. There are many different types of Lymphoma..
it seems to me that if he does decide to run for President, that he's going to have to be much more forthcoming about his illness, how it's being treated, etc.

My guess is he was going to try and keep this quiet but somebody got a hold of it, and FOX gave him the heads up before it broke. It's really a shame that even a potential candidate can't have any semblance of a private life anymore.

This is shaping up to be one nasty down and dirty campaign.

7. Mario Lemieux (hockey great) has/had lymphoma of some type.
It's treatable, and I assume curable for some, but then he was a fairly young/strong man. Fred shoulda said something sooner--it's not an issue of privacy, when you are going to run for prez. McCain and Rudy have been forthcoming about their cancer.

15. when mario had cancer
he had to take time away for treatment.

will this force him to step away from his possible run for president?

16. I remember Mario's battles with it (grew up in the 'Burgh)--it's hard
to say how this will affect things for Fred, because he's not in treatment now, from what I understand. But it sure doesn't help.

19. Has FT announced?
I musta missed it. If not, he's just a private citizen. Maybe he wanted to get this out before he announced.

I would love to see the poll reaction to this.

disease and running for the Presidency.

9. Nope, the media will have dozens of reports on how lymphoma
really "isn't that bad", and nobody will dare question his decisions. They only question Dem candidates' judgment, values, and motives. How soon till Limbaugh accuses ol' Fred of trying to drum up sympathy for a bump in polls? Oh, wait--NEVER!

10. that is a signal that he's running
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<...> Thompson, a former Republican senator from Tennessee, has been discussing his condition privately "for sometime," the source close to Thompson said, and his decision to disclose the information signals he is seriously considering a White House bid.

"This disclosure should indicate to everyone interested in seeing Fred enter the race for the White House how serious he is taking in taking the next steps toward launching a campaign,"
the source said.

The Georgetown University Medical Center oncologist handling Thompson's case will be holding a press conference on the former senator's health later Wednesday. <...>

But of course, I believe that if he runs, he gets the nom.

14. Doubt it--he looks as unwell as McCain. Americans tend to prefer
healthy candidates. Rudy's type of cancer was more curable. Think it will be Rudy.

25. It'd probably be Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota
He's a rumored top pick for McCain, too; actually, he's endorsed McCain. However, Rudy or Romney would almost certainly need to pick a southerner if they're the nominees. Thompson, as a Southerner, could afford to branch out a bit and pick someone from another region of the country.

Shall we not apply to Fred Thompson the same test that the GOP applied to Elizabeth Edwards? :eyes:

24. man that sucks...
may not agree with him on politics and such, but his character on Law and Order has really grown on me over the past year or so. He's no Adam Schiff (Steven Hill), but I like his character's personality, warts and all. Reminds me a little too much of my grandfather...

Anyhoo, good health to him.
