I live in the hills on the Eastside and I felt it. It wasn't dramatic--but I felt my house "swaying" and my cats freaked out. Not the jerky rumbling kind like you usually think of.

69. You know what was WIERD...

I work in the basement of this house with the boss, who is blind. There's a door out to the garage. About an hour before the quake, the door rattled violently, as if someone was out there. This continued for some time. I was afraid to open it, but when I finally did there was... no... one... there.... *creeepy* Of course at that time I had no idea.

So the boss says, looks like we have a built-in earthquake predictor!

The boss is on the phone now with the didja-feel-it calls, and we are enjoying some coffee with brandy in it (and I don't drink hehe *hic*)

In Santa Barbara we have wires down and stuck elevators. No damage reported yet. It was a very rolling type earthquake, not jerky. Lasted abut 30 seconds or more. Felt like I was having a dizzy spell. Bob

53. Strikes me as a normal aftershock pattern

I have personal experience with the Big Bear 6.6 quake of 1992, and that afternoon I must have felt dozens upon dozens of moderate to fairly large aftershocks (in the 3.5 to 4.5 range, I would guess). And a small number of large ones (approaching 5.0).

I'm in Oxnard in a 22-story tower, 16 stories up. It's on rollers. We rocked and rolled for a long time. Could hear the beams creaking or whatever. Everyone in the office called their homes; seems everyone felt it from S.B. to Santa Paula and Fillmore, to Ventura, Oxnard and Camarillo.

pretty good, in a brick building in southern SF. I was surprised to have felt it at such a distance.

6.5 is damn healthy in size. And there's always a risk of having an even BIGGER one with hours of a big temblor like that. I'm keeping an eye on those aftershocks.

We had a few local quakes on the Hayward fault that had us all saying it was time for that puppy to rip. THAT is going to be ugly.

Quake Strikes Central Coast

An earthquake, registering 6.4 on the Richter scale and centered near San Simeon, rattled a wide range of Central and Southern California this morning, according to Caltech.

The tembler, which was based in Cambria, about six miles from San Simeon and 185 miles northwest of Los Angeles, was not believed to have caused major damage or injuries. There were early reports of minor highway and building damage.

The quake ran along a series of faults that run parallel to the San Andreas fault, said Lucy Jones, a scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey office in Pasadena. The quake struck along 20 miles of a unchartered fault.

"It's luckily on the coast — there is not very much nearby," Jones said.

71. You Should Take Distance From Epicenter Into Account

In SF in '89, you would have been about 50 miles from the epicenter.

Today, you were approximately 200 miles from the epicenter. 6.5 is no 7, but just the same, if you were 150 miles closer, you might not call it a "walk in the park".

I was in SF for the '89 quake and I'll never forget that feeling.

Then on 9/9/01 we had a 4.1 here in West Hollywood (centered here and was close to the surface) and it was totally different. Much more sharp shaking as opposed to the 1989 quake.

(KCBS) - The Central Valley town of Paso Robles has sustained severe damage, because of a strong earthquake that shook the region earlier today, which was felt from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
The quake, with a magnitude 6.5, hit about seven miles north of San Simeon near Hearst Castle.

KCBS listener Karen is visiting Paso Robles from Mill Valley.

"We went into town, and it is like the 1906 earthquake down there," she said. "There are buildings down. There are (some) trees collapsed. There are a lot of brick buildings in Paso Robles that are very historical."

Also, "there's a lot of cars under buildings. I saw one truck that was completely buried by a pile of bricks."

Pedestrians are directing traffic, because the stoplights are out.

"It's pretty bad downtown," Karen said. "All the old brick buildings look like they're going to have to be torn down. They've got big cracks."

KCBS listener Lisa said the historic Paso Robles clock tower, which was built in the 1880s, has also come down.

"It's just a pile of brick right now," she said.

The media is great about never putting things into context.. They forget just how BIG California is.. This map can help give perspective to where the quake was and how close your relatives may or may not be..

MSRNC spent an HOUR interviewing people in the LA area..(over 200 miles SOUTH of where the quake actually WAS.

I live far north of SF near the Oregon border (nothing felt up here). I am 800 miles from LA and probably 600 miles to where the epicenter is located (or more).

I always laugh when I get some idiot telling me that they have services right where I live in LA - duhhh .... I'd be better off looking in Oregon or Nevada than this part of southern CA.

Saw local videos and it looks rough for Paso Robles - 3 dead, some folks trapped under fallen bldgs, lots of general shake damage.

SLO County has ~250,000 people, clustered in the North County's (that's Paso, and others) Salinas Valley; San Luis Obispo, 32 miles south; South County (that's Pismo Beach and Diablo Canyon nuke plant) and the Coast (Morro Bay, Cayucos, Cambria, and San Simeon). Everything else is (still) cattle, wine grapes or empty.

I went to the wine festable in Paso in 2002. It had been years since I'd been to downtown Paso and I love the shops there. It's so sad to see this.

Do you know if power is back up in Atascadero yet? My step mom called me about an hour and a half ago and she's w/o. I called a friend of mine that works near city hall in Atas they are worried about that building. Have you heard anything about that?

Of course they are - there're just aren't enough good restaurants up in Paso Robles :). Seriously, my distrust of the national media stems from Rather's coverage of the Loma Prieta quake in '89: lots of coverage in San Francisco (since everyone was there for the World Series anyway), a decent amount in Oakland (not that far away, as well as having the most casualties), almost none in the non-affluent, largley Hispanic farm town of Watsonville, which was devastated by the earthquake (what - go all the way down *there* just to see the destroyed downtown?) If it's near a camera, it's news. (Sorry, discussions of earthquakes get us Californians talking about where we were during our big ones. I was on a train about 200 miles north of yesterday's quake, and didn't feel it over the normal train motion.)

The bodies of two people were pulled from the rubble of a building in downtown Paso Robles, said Terry Minshull of the Paso Robles Fire Department. He said the victims were people missing from a nearby store.

Firefighters searched debris along a block of collapsed buildings in the town of 25,000 about 20 miles east of the epicenter. Cars were crushed by the debris.

109. I'm heartbroken.

My heart is just broken seeing the destruction, knowing that people lost their lives in what should be a joyous season. I sat in front of that jewelry store with my dog so many days.. and have done so much Christmas shopping in that block. It was our favorite place in SLO County for evening and morning walks. It's really quite lovely. It's so hard to see those photos. My father in law and his wife live in Paso, as well as several friends. In nearby Atascadero and Templeton, we also have friends. I'll be anxiously awaiting word on the victim's identities, and hope that they will not find any more. It is so devastating to lose someone near the holidays...

We just moved to Washington state from the Paso/Atascadero area. I lived in the area for 15 years, my husband lived around SLO county his whole life. Because so much of that area is unreinforced masonry, I always have an escape plan in the back of my mind when shopping in towns like that. When the ground starts shaking, I'd be in the middle of the street. The sad thing is that there is a large open park and street just steps from where the building fell. But no one thinks that the buildings will fall. It's the facades that are so dangerous in those towns.

It woke me up with a gentle shake. I thought someone was nudging my bed to rouse me. Then I thought it was my own heartbeat! LOL It was later in the day that I realized it was a quake.

It was some distance south from Monterey. Not quite the "central" coast. Oh details details, picky picky eh? We are fine, but some are not so fine in Paso Robles. They say the diablo canyon NUCLEAR reactor is "OKAY".....eeeek
