Two names – interim U.S. Attorney Karen Hewitt and former Assistant U.S. Attorney John Rice – have been submitted to the White House as potential successors to Carol Lam.
Advertisement Gerald Parsky, the chairman of four California committees that advise the Bush administration on U.S. attorney replacements statewide, passed along his choices within the last week after conducting interviews, said sources familiar with the selection process. They asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential.

Hewitt joined the San Diego U.S. Attorney's Office in 2000. She was appointed executive assistant U.S. attorney a year ago and sworn in as interim top prosecutor in February, after Lam's departure.
Rice was on the team of assistant U.S. attorneys who successfully prosecuted ex-San Diego City Councilmen Ralph Inzunza and Michael Zucchet and strip club associates in a corruption scandal in 2005. A judge reversed the guilty verdict against Zucchet. Rice now works in private practice.
