Militants arrested as top judge is killed
December 24, 2003
American soldiers arrested Muslim militants with ties to an Iraqi fugitive near the top of their most wanted list, but the assassination of a senior Iraqi judge highlighted continuing instability in postwar Iraq.
Youssef Khoshi, a chief investigating judge in the northern city of Mosul, was shot and killed last night by three men in a car.
"He was shot six times from behind in the back. He died immediately," police Major Ali Mohammed said today.
The murder was part of a wave of attacks in recent weeks on officials working under Iraq's US administration, including policemen, oil executives and other judges.
Guerrillas have killed US soldiers and anyone seen cooperating with them.
