Device Found At Women's Clinic Was Explosive, Police Say
Source: Associated Press

AUSTIN — A package left at a clinic that performs abortions contained an explosive device that investigators said Thursday could have been deadly.

The incident came just days after a national abortion group alerted providers around the country to an increased risk of violence.

The device, found in a duffle bag Wednesday, "was configured in such a way to cause serious bodily injury or death," said David Carter, assistant chief of the Austin Police Department.

---
"We know that when abortion is in the news, we also see clinics targeted for increased violence and disruption," said Vicki Saporta, president of the National Abortion Federation. The group put out a memo to abortion providers around the country, asking them to be on alert.

21. Last time Homeland Security cared about Austin was when DeLay
got them to track the Democratic legislators who broke quorum and flew to Oklahoma to prevent a re-redistricting vote. I'm sure they are more interested in promoting Republican politics than in tracking down Republican terrorists.

5. Talk about an oxymoron!
Pro-life hell bent on trying to kill people. How would that freak have felt had he/she killed a pregnant woman and her unborn baby? Would that have been considered a win or a loss?

the domestic terrorists anti-choice fanatics take it as a license to resume their insurgent campaign of violence against clinics. :grr:

10. Terrorist actions, funny, they call it something else.
The action of trying to bomb any abortion clinic is a terrorist action, nothing they are doing in that report suggests though that they are calling a spade a spade. It sends chills down my spine that anyone would bomb people with that obviously deadly intent while claiming any kind of morality.

16. From the article:
"After an employee found the suspicious package in the parking lot, a bomb squad detonated the device. The immediate vicinity, including nearby Interstate 35, was evacuated briefly.

"We used a small explosive charge to render the device safe," Carter said. "When they did that a substance came out of the device that appeared to be consistent with an explosive."

Tests later confirmed that the package was explosive. Authorities have asked area abortion providers to be particularly vigilant in the coming days, Carter said."

18. This is so important
"We know that when abortion is in the news, we also see clinics targeted for increased violence and disruption," said Vicki Saporta, president of the National Abortion Federation. The group put out a memo to abortion providers around the country, asking them to be on alert.

The anti-abortion Supreme Court decision and anti-abortion discussions gave PERMISSION to the anti-abortion NUTS to try to do horrendous physical violence against women and abortion providers.

The same thing happens whenever there are anti-gay and lesbian discussions prominent in the news -- actual physical attacks against gays and lesbians increase. This is well documented by the Human Rights Campaign (is that their current name?) and other groups which track such things.

This is why one of my personal crusades is against anti-woman rhetoric here at DU. It seems harmless to so many of you, but it actually gives PERMISSION to certain other DUers as well as anti-woman NUTS who may be lurking to disrespect women and ultimately to participate (or just sit idly by) while women are deprived of full equality and full human rights. It gives PERMISSION to some to disrespect women enough to hurt them (rape, domestic violence, forced pregnancy and birth, etc.).

To probably sound (to some) like a broken record: I beg all those here who use gender slurs like bitch, whore, etc., to cease and desist. All those rightwing women are despicable, it's true, but you don't harm them as much as you harm ALL women (including the women you may love) when you indulge in gender slurs. Thanks.

19. There were a bunch of pro-lifers at my university today
standing around with their giant pictures of aborted fetuses. I was in a pissed-off mood, itching for a fight, so I went up to a girl holding one of the signs.

"Did you vote for George Bush?"

"No. I hate him."

I walked away.
