WASHINGTON - Several hundred pages of e-mails to and from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' former chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, are being withheld from congressional investigators.

The documents, more than 600 pages in all, deal with responses to inquiries from members of Congress and reporters following the firings of seven U.S. attorneys in December.

The list of e-mails the Justice Department is not turning over starts with an inquiry from Sen. Jon Ensign, R-Nev., two days after his state's U.S. attorney, Daniel Bogden, was notified of his dismissal, and ends a few days before Sampson resigned as Gonzales' chief of staff.

Sampson's attorney, Bradford Berenson, said he has not seen any of the material in question.

In his appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, Gonzales said he has been "extremely forthcoming with information," and that the department had turned over thousands of pages of internal communications and submitted to hours of interviews with department officials.

"These are not the actions of someone with something to hide," Gonzales said.

20. Here's the quote...
<http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04272007/transcript1.html>

...JON STEWART: After weeks of mock testimony, there you have it, Alberto Gonzales does not know what happened, but he assures you what he doesn't remember was handled properly.

END CLIP: THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART

JON STEWART: And by the way, that was all just — that was a game, and he knew it, and the guys on the committee knew it. And for the President to come out after that and say, "Everything I saw there gave me more confidence in him," that solidified my notion that, "Oh, it's because what he expected of Gonzalez was" it's sort of like, do you remember in GOODFELLAS? When Henry Hill got arrested for the first time and Robert DeNiro met him at the courthouse and Henry Hill was really upset, 'cause he thought Robert DeNiro would be really mad at him. And DeNiro comes up to him and he gives him a $100 and he goes, "You got pinched. We all get pinched, but you did it right, you didn't say nothing."

BILL MOYERS: Gonzales said nothing.

JON STEWART: Right. And "you went up there and said nothing. You gave them no legal recourse against you, and you made yourself a smart man, a self-made man look like an utter pinhead on national television, and you did it for me."

7. "It's a modified limited hang out"
PRESIDENT: You think, you think we want to, want to go

this route now? And the--let it hang out, so to speak?

DEAN: Well, it's, it isn't really that--

HALDEMAN: It's a limited hang out.

DEAN: It's a limited hang out.

EHRLICHMAN: It's a modified limited hang out.

PRESIDENT: Well, it's only the questions of the thing hanging out publicly or privately.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modified_limited_hang_out

"the phrase has also become a political catchphrase used to describe any grudging partial release of information."

That's what the "extremely forthcoming with information," of Gonzales reminds me of. It would be fitting to hear Gonzales' utterances compared to that.

10. See also "limited hangout"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_hangout

A "limited hangout" is a form of deception, misdirection, or coverup often associated with intelligence agencies involving a release or "mea culpa" type of confession of only part of a set of previously hidden sensitive information, that establishes credibility for the one releasing the information who by the very act of confession appears to be "coming clean" and acting with integrity; but in actuality by withholding key facts is protecting a deeper crime and those who could be exposed if the whole truth came out.

9. "investigation has been a rush to headlines, instead of a search for corruption."
Also on Friday, Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty spent hours being interviewed by congressional staff in closed-door meetings. Likewise, Assistant Attorney General William Moschella spent 11 hours in interviews on Wednesday.
Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, the ranking Republican on the House subcommittee conducting the investigation, said that the "investigation has been a rush to headlines, instead of a search for corruption."
"Interviews with Justice Department individuals involved are ongoing, the attorney general has testified and will come back, the White House has offered interviews and Congress has received over 6,000 pages of documents," Cannon said. "While I will continue to insist on openness from all parties, I will also insist that this does not become an open-ended exercise in futility."
