Blair quit plans due 'next week'
Source: BBC

Tony Blair will say "something definitive" next week about his plans to step down as prime minister.
He has already said he will leave No 10 by September, but there has been speculation about the precise timings.

He appeared to rule out suggestions he might announce his departure before, or straight after, this week's elections.

Sometimes I really wish we had term-limits for PMs.

5. No, it has been for some time expected that he'd 'announce his resignation' in May
The merry month of May indeed - though it's not clear how much better things will be under Brown. Better, but I don't know how much.

6. That's another thing that puzzles me....
Why Brown? In other words, why a conservative?

7. Who else in the Labour party is a credible alternative?
The rest of the cabinet are no different and the left currently has two candidates, soon (we are told) to become one candidate once they can agree who has the most support and even then that candidate will not have the experience, ministerial achievements or name recognition of Brown.

The only question is whether or not any other candidate could get the required 44 nominations from MP's needed to get onto the ballot paper in the first place. Barring a miraculous cock-up on his part, Gordon Brown will be coronated leader of the Labour party and prime minister.

10. Blair endorses Brown as Britain's next leader

Blair endorses Brown as Britain's next leader
Tony Blair has publicly endorsed Chancellor Gordon Brown
as his successor.

By Ian MacKenzie
May 1, 2007

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Tony Blair endorsed long-standing finance
minister Gordon Brown as Britain's next leader on Tuesday and said
he would announce next week when he was stepping aside as prime
minister.

Ten years after the landslide election win that swept Labor to power,
Blair said now was the time for a new team to run Britain and Brown
would make a "great prime minister."

"Within the next few weeks I won't be the prime minister of this
country," Blair told a Labor Party rally in Scotland, where his party
is set for a drubbing in elections on Thursday.

"In all probability a Scot will become prime minister of this country
and that's someone who built one of the strongest economies in the
world and who I've always said would make a great prime minister."
