Intelligence cites NJ chemical plants as possible targets
December 25, 2003, 11:41 AM EST

TRENTON, N.J. -- Intelligence officials say New Jersey's chemical plants have been singled out as potential terrorist targets.

The information does not mention specific production facilities or geographic locations, officials familiar with the intelligence reports told The Record of Bergen County.

New Jersey Attorney General Peter Harvey said state and local law enforcement agencies have been warned about the potential threat.

"There are some enhanced security measures with regards to law enforcement at chemical plants and other critical infrastructure, but I'm not going to say what they are," Harvey told The Record.

3. Since Tom Ridge doesn't want to listen to the CIA
and seems to prefer 'private intelligence sources', I want to know who the hell is he relying on for this misinformation? Here is a guy running this huge Dept of Homeland Security with no real background in this stuff and he's got everyone in a complete tizzy over a lot of noise that right wing wackos are feeding to him. These folks are out of control.

Julian Borger in Washington
Wednesday December 24, 2003

The US has deployed anti-aircraft missiles around Washington and other possible terrorist targets in fear of another attack using a commercial plane, but there is disagreement among intelligence officials about how direct the threat is to America.

Tom Ridge, the head of US homeland security, put the country on high alert on Sunday, warning of a possible attack over the holiday season on a par with the September 11 attacks, or even more devastating.

<snip>

US officials have insisted that there is unanimity within the administration over the credibility of its intelligence on this occasion, but one intelligence source in Washington said that some CIA officials believed that Mr Ridge had exaggerated the threat to the US.

"There has been a lot of dissent about this," said the source, who has close contact with CIA officials. "There isn't any substantiated information about an attack on the United States itself. Everything seems to point towards an attack on Saudi Arabia or the Arabian peninsula."

4. Voluntary security measures
As I recall - the chem industry was allowed to make voluntary security measures when they fought off attempts to force them legislatively.
Always adept at shifting costs to the public, they probably expect tax payers to foot the bill for their increased security now.

6. There is little "intelligence" in our Intelligence establishment
Why hasn't Tony Blair put the UK on the same level of alert as Bush has put the US?

Tom Ridge should just crawl back under the rock he crawled out and take his stupid color-coded alert system with him.

For all I know, we have a couple of Al-Qaeda jokers talking about impending attacks in order to cause upheaval in the US, not to mention bankrupt the cities that have to bear the cost of all these alerts.
