http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/12/26/1072308673524.html

Many people died early today when a major earthquake hit southeast Iran and destroyed the historic quarter of the city of Bam, the governor of Kerman province told Iranian radio.

Governor Mohamed Ali Karimi said: "We have no exact knowledge of the scale of the damage and the deaths, but one thing is sure: the historic quarter of Bam has been completely destroyed and many of our countrymen are in the ruins."

The Strasbourg Observatory in France said the quake measured 6.6 on the Richter Scale.

Either this is a battle of the earthquake war machines :tinfoilhat: , or the crust of the earth is doing something really ominous.

11. 6.7 is a strong quake for a populated area.
Edited on Fri Dec-26-03 06:18 AM by SahaleArm
Tectonic activity is constant - not unusual to see a bunch of 6+ quakes, 7+ is rarer. Since the oceans cover 70%+ of the earth's surface, most quakes happen offshore.

6. Looks bad
Old buildings and even ancient mud huts spell bad news. This is in the region near Afghanistan and Pakistan too so I wonder if Osama felt the quake.

7. A.P. article on the Iran earthquake
Severe Earthquake Hits Southeast Iran

By Associated Press
TEHRAN, Iran — A severe earthquake devastated the historic city of Bam in southeast Iran on Friday, and officials said many people were killed.

Hasan Khoshrou, a legislator for Kerman province where the quake occurred, said he had been told the devastation in the city of 80,000 people was "beyond imagination."

"No death toll is available, but it looks to be very, very high," Khoshrou said.

Iranian television said the magnitude 6.3 quake leveled about 60 percent of the houses in Bam, 630 miles southeast of the capital, killing many people as they slept. Authorities put out a call for blood donations.

13. It does make you stop and wonder.
There does seem to be an increase in big quakes recently.

Does everybody have an earthquake preparedness kit?

14. Something for the conspiracy theorists to chew on...
<snip>
At the Peoples’ Health Assembly in December 2000 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Dr. Bertell revealed to a shocked and incredulous audience that ‘the latest weapons in the arsenal of the US military is Planet Earth itself ... and weather will be one of the worst destructive weapons by the year 2025’.

Dr. Bertell was referring to how engineered earthquakes and tornadoes could wreak havoc on populations and nations.

According to her book, electromagnetic weapons ‘have the ability to transmit explosive and other effects such as earthquake induction across intercontinental distances to any selected target site on the globe with force levels equivalent to major nuclear explosions’.
