HARTFORD -- As political pressure mounts on Governor John G. Rowland to resign, the Connecticut Democratic Party chairman is predicting that the Legislature would move to impeach the Republican chief executive if he does not step down and ethics concerns continue to widen

"Nobody believes him anymore, even over simple things," said George Jepsen, a former Senate majority leader who now serves as state Democratic chairman. "I believe that if he doesn't resign, that he'll be impeached."

Jepsen predicted in an interview Wednesday that such a move would gain momentum, even in GOP circles, if additional revelations of ethical impropriety surface from an ongoing federal investigation and media scrutiny of the Rowland administration's relationship with preferred contractors.

Rowland, alternately contrite and pugnacious, has pledged to continue a third term despite his admission this month that he lied about free work done on his vacation home by friends and contractors who do business with the state. In addition, an ongoing federal investigation into bid-rigging of state contracts is believed to have expanded its focus to include questions about the governor himself.

Who is the Lt. Governor of Connecticut -- is it a Republican or Democrat or what?

Maybe Terry McAuliffe could give Joe Lieberman a call and suggest that he drop out of the presidential race and gear up for a run for the governor's seat in Connecticut next time. (He'd have to sublease that New Hampshire apt.) A more liberal Democrat could then run for Lieberman's seat and Lieberman would be able to serve as Connecticut's governor. Lieberman would make a very capable administrator.

My own family has personally suffered due to Roland's corruption regarding contractors, etc. I've known for years the layers of sleaze this man has had. I couldn't believe this state re-elected him last year. Payback's a bitch, ain't it John Roland, and you're finally getting your just desserts!!! I hope he's going to end up on a bus back to Waterbury with the rest of those corrupt losers from that town.

I want Rowland to stay in office as the poster child of the republican party. I want him likened to Bush and Cheney. I want people to start talking about Rowland for the 2008 republican presidential nomination. I want him to drag Shays, Johnson, and Simmons down to defeat in 2004.

Democrats should defend Rowland by saying:

Why should Rowland resign when Cheney hasn't?

Why should Rowland resign when he is such a close, personal friend and ideological twin of Bush?

Why should Rowland resign for corruption when Tom DeLay and Denny Hastert haven't?

Why should Rowland resign when nothing says "republican" like corruption approved by God?

I bet that Rowland gets a call from Karl Rove and is forced to step down before he gets impeached. The GOP wouldn't want a very visible and ugly impeachment trial of one of their governors in a Presidential election year.

I don't know whether Rowland actually will hurt the party outside of Connecticut though in which case the White House may just pretend that Bush does not know Rowland.
