Paul Wellstone was the only progressive in the U.S. Senate. Mother Jones magazine once described him as, "The first 1960s radical elected to the U.S. senate." He was also the last. Since defeating incumbent Republican Rudy Boschowitz 12 years ago in a grassroots upset, Wellstone emerged as the strongest, most persistent, most articulate and most vocal Senate opponent of the Bush administration.

In a senate that is one heartbeat away from Republican control, Wellstone was more than just another Democrat. He was often the lone voice standing firm against the status-quo policies of both the Democrats and the Republicans. As such, he earned the special ire of the Bush administration and the Republican Party, who made Wellstone's defeat that party's number one priority this year (2002).

Then he died.

Wellstone now joins the ranks of other American politicians who died in small plane crashes. Another recent victim was Missouri's former Democratic governor, Mel Carnahan, who lost his life in 2000, three weeks before Election Day, during his Senatorial race against John Ashcroft. Carnahan went on to become the first dead man to win a Senatorial race, humiliating and defeating the unpopular Ashcroft posthumously. Ashcroft, despite his unpopularity, went on to be appointed Attorney General by George W. Bush. Investigators determined that Carnahan's plane went down due to "poor visibility."

a)He's for keeping the troops in Iraq. The peace community is already pissed at newly minted Senator Amy Klobuchar for voting for the blank check war funding this last week. Franken won't be able to crawl away from his continuing support of the war and a pissed progressive wing of the DFL.
b)He's a hot head and will lose his shit at some point. Many in Minnesota politics have already seen this - many times. Combined with the crying-at-the-drop-of-a-hat and this ain't a good combination.
c)He does have opposition in the form of deep pocketed Mike Ciresi and possibly (though no confirmation) peace guru Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer. Pallmeyer is a better public speaker than Franken.

Stick to writing Al, you're great at it and can continue to use the popularity to fundraise for others.

They might not because it would look too suspicious. But after dismantling the GOP in Illinois, Fitz has now set his sights on the Democratic Party in Illinois. And, of course, too many elected Democrats in this state are giving him all he needs. They amazingly seem to think they won't get caught like the Republicans did.

Actually, I think the Governor is going to come out clean (incompetent, but cleanly so). There is little doubt the guy he put in charge of contracting out state work is as crooked as they come. But did he know that when he hired the guy? Given that one of the first things he did as Governor was to shut down an illegal dump that had been operated under the Republicans for years by one of his in-laws, he would seem to be serious about trying to run a clean administration, even if that means taking on members of his own family.

Of course, the problem with shutting down that dump is that now all we ever hear in Illinois is that his in-law was operating an illegal dump. Nevermind we only know this because he ordered it closed. No good deed goes unpunished in politics.

I still see Gonzales is smirking around the DOJ, still committing crimes without even a no confidence vote. Rice is still ignoring subpoenas, Rove is still lurking around the White House and Bush/Cheney are still gearing up for an attack on Iran. At this point I have no reason to believe this will be any different. A few show trials, refusal to hand over more emails, more outright disregard for subpoenas and in the end the criminals walk free.

Sorry for the pessimism but if recent history is any indication this will just be buried under the weight of lies, incompetence on the part of the dems and corporate disinformation. Seems to be working quite well for the Bush/Cheney crime family so far.

It was reported that USA Todd Graves and his family will personally benefit from no-bid
state contracts valued at more than $3.6 million given by Missouri Governor Matt Blunt.

Another connection came to light in Missouri, the investigation of Medicare fraud.
In both Missouri and California, Tenet Healthcare was a target bilking billions.
