Some who supported Nader regret decision
Some who supported Nader regret decision

December 27, 2003
Associated Press

DENVER -- When the first bombs fell on Baghdad, Jason Salzman took a razor blade to the bumper stick on his car that said: "Unrepentant Nader Voter."

He scratched off the "Un."

Salzman says he made a mistake voting for Ralph Nader, and helping George Bush (steal the presidency).

though there are rumblings, of course, that his campaign was funded in no insignificant measure by cleverly camouflaged republican appendages.

The story was from today's Hartford Courant, but it is not 'breaking news', true. It should be in the General Discussion area.

Thank you,

46. I agree
and I think blaming Nader distracts us from addressing the reasons why so many folks voted for him in the first place.

Not to mention that Gore won anyway - regardless of Nader's presence in the race.

Election fraud, tampering, and a coup d'etat - not Nader - is where the resentment or anger should be directed.

13. And so you are saying, in essence, that this is the fault of
The Clenis?

Of course. This is the organizing principle of what now passes for contemporary political analysis.

The voters punished Gore because Clinton was naughty. It makes no sense, but it sells a lot of National Enquirers.

23. thank you for saying that!
Clinton did so much good for this country and the only thing people have to complain about is he got a hummer in the oval office. The republicans tricked, lied, coerced to get him impeached, and spent millions of dollars to do that. The democrats didn't have the balls to back him up. Imagine, that is the only thing that people have to complain about and he lost the election for Gore cuz of that. I really think not.

30. Hi Terwilliger. Glad to see you again
I will have to be honest and admit that I have never given much thought to JUST WHAT THE FUCK WHAPPENED? (w)happened?) except that Gore is not the best campaigner in the world. And you don't have to yell either. It hurts my ears this late at night. Gore could (should) have run a better campaign. I think he may have underestimated the morAn from Texas a little bit too. Bush ran a slash and burn campaign from the primaries on right on into the general election. Gore was not prepared for that. You know the old story. Nice guys finish last. Especially in politics. See ya later.

There are recorded voting-day abuses in Tennessee, just as they were in FL.

The election of 2000, just lie Bu$h, has an asterisk beside it * ...
to cite things like not winning TN as 'fact' without exploring possible corruption is vital to the facts.

16. I'm sure that was part of it
but you have to admit that Gore sometimes didnt seem to know which way to go. For starters, if you can't ride Clinton's coat tails in you are dooing something wrong. With all the shit the right tried, Clinton probably would have won a third term if allowd to do so.
Also, if Gore was going to distance himself from Clinton he should hve done it more effectively. Gore is a very smart person but probably not the politician tht Clinton is, his strengths seem to lie more in his directness and sincerity. Yet he didn't score on either of those

19. Dang, I wish our election system had an...
...instant replay rule.

Gore's "loss" resulted from several distinct causes, not the least of which was Bush's end-run with one second remaining in overtime - and he stepped out of bounds! I don't know how the refs missed it, but we didn't.

Gore ran a weak campaign and corporate media amplified it. Nader gathered votes that most likely would have gone to Gore. Bush appears to have lied during his campaign about his intended policies. The Republican spin machine was much more effective than ours. The negative affects of Clinton's hummer is arguably a wash, since his coattails may have carried as equally a positive weight.

Fixing blame for Gore's loss is kind of senseless, because Gore won. It's just that with refs on the other team's payroll, Gore would have needed to win by more than a field goal.

17. "You can fool some of the people all of the time."
Of course, that would make them fools all of the time.

And the VRWC counted on there being just enough of them.

Although those few will never get that they have been completely distracted by a triviality, here goes again: The fix was in. If Monica didn't exist, Bill Clinton would have been impeached for jaywalking if they could have tricked him into crossing between instead of the green. They spent 70 million dollars proving he was the most honest president we'd ever had, and then got him for what was nobody's business but his own.

Monica wasn't the problem. The conspiracy was the problem. Further proof? A complete boyscout named Al Gore with an unimpeachable reputation for uprightness was labeled a liar and the only question was whether he was a cunning liar or a congenital one.

21. Everyone to their vote, but I feel sustained anger against
those who couldn't come up with the vision to predict what was going to happen. Every person in this country said it was going to be close.

I am extremely angry that Nader supporters went along with the cockeyed scheme to cross vote between states. I remember the cuteness and smugness of it all and I am sickened that anyone educated in this country could have supported him after - oh forget it...I'd really like to get over it - I wish I'd never heard that now...now...some are repenting.

29. I don't regret my vote for Nader
I know I would regret it if my state had been close, but my state went so hard for Bush that my vote wouldn't have made any difference.

I do regret that Nader ran and that Gore is not president, but I think to a large extent he is being made into a scapegoat.

Gore made more of an attempt to differentiate himself from Clinton, than from Bush, and it therefore became easy for someone to claim that there was little real difference between the candidates. If Gore had run a strong campaign and displayed good political judgement, he would have won handily, and Nader voters would not even have been a factor.

33. I'm tired of the crap that continues about Gore losing the election
Edited on Sun Dec-28-03 02:19 AM by rmpalmer
I'll admit it probably wasn't the best campaign in history, but a lot of the crap that gets spewed out about his campaign was what the media whores, with the help of the talking points they took straight from the RW media machine, spewed out.

Gore had to overcome the fact that Clinton was put through the impeachment scandal for a stupid lie about his sex life plus the Monica hysteria. Plus every perceived scandal about Clinton and Gore fundraising, etc.

8 years of talk-radio that was 90%+ conservative attacking Clinton and Gore every day.

Media Whores who attacked him unmercifully every day for every little gaffe, painted him as reinventing himself, continually repeated the falsehoods of him inventing the internet, Love Canal, etc. till much of the stupid American public thought him a liar.

The same media let Dubya get a pass, and if Bush just showed up at the debates and committed no major gaffe gave him a win. Course the makeup and the sighs didn't help Gore in any case.

As to Gore should've won his home state, Tenn has been going Red for awhile just like much of the South.

Bush just like this year had tons of money, more than Gore had.

Then of course we had Jebbie's and Harris purge of the voting rolls of tens of thousands of probable Democratic voters. And the infamous butterfly ballot. Yet Gore still won Florida - and if Nader hadn't been in the race would've won it by enough there never would've been a recount.

It was Bush who lost the popular vote and lost Florida despite his brother being governor and rigging that state for him.

Bush was the one who like the slacker he is didn't campaign hard in the closing week of the election cause Uncle Karl told him he had it sewed up.

Meanwhile Gore was going almost 24/7 in the last week's and had overcome the early Bush lead.

Yeah, I'm angry Dems didn't fight the recount in 2000, and except for the Black Caucus they had on their 'pink tutus'. But don't forget the Brownshirt tactics of the Repug thugs in Florida and their RW media machine drowning out any calls for fairness. And of course Bushie had the SCOTUS to pull it all out for him.

Gore and the Dems acted like Gentleman and Ladies, the Repugs as usual acted like Thugs!
