VIENNA, Austria - Former U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, who was elected Austrian president despite an international scandal about his secretive World War II military service, died Thursday, Austrian media reported. He was 88.

Waldheim, who was hospitalized in Vienna late last month with a fever-causing infection, died of heart failure, state broadcaster ORF reported, citing his family.

Waldheim's tenure as U.N. chief from 1972-82 and his election as president in 1986 were overshadowed by revelations that he belonged to a German army unit that committed atrocities in the Balkans during World War II.

2.  He admitted concealing his service with Hitler's Wehrmacht in the Balkans but always denied knowing
knowing of Nazi war crimes committed there at the time, including deportations of thousands of Greek Jews"

Total bullshit. Anyone that reads history regarding WWII will know that any German officer serving in Serbia or Greece knew full well what was going on.

after mussolini's failed attempt at invading those nations, hitler had to come in and finish off the job. And in finishing off the job, he pointedly made that area an example of "nazi wrath" primarily, because both the Serbs and the Greeks although outnumbered and out gunned, fought to tenaciously to virtually the last man.

good old dickhead kurt was a good little bunter (sp) up until the end.

Arnold's Nazi Problem
Why won't he repudiate Kurt Waldheim?

~snip~
A little refresher course may be in order. Kurt Waldheim, a widely esteemed former secretary general of the United Nations, was running for president of Austria in March 1986 when it came to light that he had participated in Nazi atrocities during World War II. Waldheim had always maintained that he had served in the Wehrmacht only briefly and that after being wounded early in the war, he had returned to Vienna to attend law school. In fact, Waldheim had resumed military service after recuperating from his injury and had been an intelligence officer in Germany's Army Group E when it committed mass murder in the Kozara region of western Bosnia. (Waldheim's name appears on the Wehrmacht's "honor list" of those responsible for the atrocity.) In 1944, Waldheim had reviewed and approved a packet of anti-Semitic propaganda leaflets to be dropped behind Russian lines, one of which ended, "enough of the Jewish war, kill the Jews, come over." After the war, Waldheim was wanted for war crimes by the War Crimes Commission of the United Nations, the very organization he would later head. None of these revelations prevented Waldheim from winning the Austrian election, but after he became president, the U.S. Justice Department put Waldheim on its watch list denying entry to "any foreign national who assisted or otherwise participated in activities amounting to persecution during World War II." The international community largely shunned Waldheim, and he didn't run for re-election. (This information comes from the1992 book Betrayal: The Untold Story of the Kurt Waldheim Investigation and Cover-Up, by Eli M. Rosenbaum and William Hoffer.)

But why do the bad die old?

At least he didn't match Leni Riefenstahl for appalling longevity.

10. The Day the Nazi Died
we're taught that after the war
the nazis vanished without a trace
but batallions of fascists
still dream of a master race
the history books they tell of their defeat in 45
why did they all come out of the woodwork
on the day the nazi died

they say the prisoner of spandau
was a symbol of defeat
whilst hess remained imprisoned
then the fascists they were beat
so the promise of an aryan world would never materialize
so why did they all come out of the woodwork
on the day the nazi died

the world is ridden by maggots
the maggots are getting fat
they're making a tasty meal
of all the bosses and bureacrats
they're taking over the board rooms
and they're fat and full of pride
and they all came out of the woodwork
on the day the nazi died

so if you meet with these historians
i'll tell you what to say
tell them that the nazis never really went away
they're out there burning houses down
and they're peddling racist lies
and we'll never rest again
until every nazi dies

12. heh...an underrated band.
They did a lot of really great stuff early on."Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records" and "Never Mind The Ballots" are still good listens.

They weren't as good as Crass or The Ex,but they had their moments. :)

14. ever hear Oi Polloi's 'tribute' to them?
amusing
it's a remake of Peni's "rock stars" with Chumba as the focus

sad... but I do like their early stuff
Even if Alice has tried to distance them from it.

20. I haven't heard it.
I don't know what happened to them.Tubthumper had a few cool tracks, but WYSIWIG just plain sucked ass.Every song was Alice singing the same way, over and over, and it's too bad because I love her voice (even the "love" side of Swinging With Raymond was cool to me),but she has driven them into the ground it seems. When the best song on a CD is a Bee Gee's cover song you know you're in trouble (the cover of New York Mining Disaster 1941 is WSYIWIG's highlight to me).

Instead of distancing themselves from the early stuff they should relisten to it and remember what made them good in the first place. If one's mom can listen to it and like it then it probably isn't very good agit-prop,is it? :)

16. Yet his VOICE lives forever, as our planet's greeting to the universe.
The "Voyager" space probe carries a recording of HIM reading this message,
as it drifts among the stars:

"As the Secretary General of the United Nations, an organizations of the 147 member states who represent almost all of the human inhabitants of the planet earth, I send greetings on behalf of the people of our planet. We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of the immense universe that surrounds us and it is with humility and hope that we take this step."

If any aliens ever find that and come here,
let's all agree: Ixnay on the Azi-nay, alright?
At least till they get to know us.
