Credit cards getting pinched at the gas pump
Source: Denver Post

So you're at the gas station filling up your vehicle, and without warning the gas pump shuts off.

What? The tank isn't full, and you know your credit card isn't over its limit.

"Using my Visa card, I commonly hit a limit and I would be standing there scratching my head," Shawn Bloomfield, who pumps premium gas into his SUV, said from his home in Allentown, Pa. "I would always assume it is the gas station setting a limit on how much gas I could purchase. It felt like a ration scenario." As the price of gasoline continues to rise, rules to prevent credit card fraud at the nation's pumps are confusing consumers who just want a full tank of gas.

Caps on transaction amounts - or the total dollar amount of gas a customer can pump into their car - are limiting some drivers of gas-guzzling vehicles.

"When I go to the gas station I now have to use two credit cards just for one tank of gas," said Paul Brisgone of Oxford, Pa.

---

For MasterCard customers, it's $75. Visa and Discover users have a $50 pay-at-the-pump limit. Transaction limits vary for corporate card holders and American Express users.

5. Won't matter.
Big Oil will soon have you going over the $75 limit, even to fill your Honda.

2. That Makes No Sense
I use Visa, and routinely go over the $50 this article mentions as a limit.

8. yes, the catch is, they only get protection
from the credit card companies up to that limit. there is so much fraud at the pump (or any self pay place) that the card companies put limits on what they will pay back (reasonably, actually, I think) if the station wants to accept $100 on a card at the pump, for instance, they are risking everything above the amount guaranteed by Visa or Mastercard.

6. I'm sorry your Corolla won't go any faster than 42 MPH.
Mine will go at least 90 (haven't tried faster) and still get 37 MPG on the highway.

9. I am glad you have to pay a penalty for driving an SUV.
You deserve to have a hassle. Go buy something that is reasonable on gas you tard!

18. Thats a good idea, for a single person
However if you have a bunch of people to move around, some of the newer reasonably sized SUVs work out pretty well. Its probably pretty equal between 6 scooters and 1 SUV :) Not to mention you can haul supplies in the SUV.

Now those idiots that commute 45 miles each way by themself in a 10MPG monster SUV.. They are the selfish bastards who dont care where or how much their oil comes from.
