Chicago's biggest mob trial in years set (Fitzgerald)
Source: AP

CHICAGO - It seemed like a good idea at the time. A gang of burglars decided in December 1977 to break into the home of Tony Accardo, one of the most powerful men in organized crime history, and rob his basement vault.

Accardo was not amused.

Six men Accardo blamed for the heist were swiftly hunted down and murdered, according to papers filed by federal prosecutors in preparation for Chicago's biggest mob trial in years, scheduled to begin Tuesday.

And that's only one of the grisly tales jurors are likely to hear at the trial stemming from the FBI's "Operation Family Secrets" investigation of 18 long-unsolved mob murders allegedly tied the Outfit, Chicago's organized crime family.

"This unprecedented indictment puts a hit on the mob," U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald said in announcing the charges in April 2005. "It is remarkable for both the breadth of the murders charged and for naming the entire Chicago Outfit as a criminal enterprise under the anti-racketeering law."

2. Giuliani was the first federal prosecutor to benefit from the RICO statute... but
the convictions he obtained will be dwarfed by those obtained by Fitz in this Chicago case.

4. Patrick Fitzgerald does seem to get off on bearding the lion, in his own den.
Daniel ain't got nuttin' on this rascal!
At least we know who would make one hell of an attorney general. Of course, his forte may well be exactly what he's at-going in with all guns blazing and scrupulously clean paperwork. Running a hundred thousand member organization might well not be his cuppa.

One brave and notoriously effective human.

8. My mother's best
friend's cousin was married to Aarcardo at one time. I remember as a child (5 = 1956) seeing him, with a bodyguard, walking down the main street of our 5 block long little town in Illinois. True picture of the gangster, fedorah and all. He gave Edna, the friend, a beautiful, stadium length mink coat. Of course, the tag was "missing".

Not having anyplace to wear such a garment, she had my mom store it in our cedar closet. In 1979 I moved to Central City, Colorado. One Sunday during our weekly telephone conversations, mom asked if I needed anything. I said I could use a warm coat for the mountain winter. She sent that beautiful mink coat. I wore it for years...with jeans and dress up garb also.

It wasn't until these past years I found out what an animal that man was...but I still loved that coat.

9. Tony Accardo lived in River Forest, IL, I believe
next door to the town where I grew up.

My older brothers told a probably-apocryphal tale that some Oak Park-River Forest High teens pantsed a kid on the Oak Park Mall one night and threw his pants over the Marshall Field's clock at Harlem & Lake, only to find out later the kid with Tony Accardo's son. The offenders lived out their high school careers in mortal fear, so tale goes.
