Missile attack kills militants in Pakistan: TV reports

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (Reuters) - A missile attack killed
at least 17 pro-Taliban militants and wounded 10 in a
Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border on Tuesday,
according to independent television news channels.

The blast occurred at a militant training camp near Datta
Khel district, some 60 km (40 miles) west of Miranshah,
the main town in North Waziristan, intelligence officials,
speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

The Pakistani army did not carry out any operations in the
area, army spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said,
adding that initial reports suggested the explosion occurred
while the militants were making a bomb.

Pakistani military spokesmen have offered such explanations
in the past when U.S. forces in Afghanistan have launched
strikes on militant targets in Pakistani territory in order
to avoid admitting any violation of territorial sovereignty.

The attack struck a madrasa, or religious school, being used as a training camp by militants in Mamy Rogha, a village near Datta Khel district, 60 km (40 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

The Pakistani army had not carried out any operations in the area, army spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said, adding that initial reports suggested the explosion occurred while the militants were making a bomb.

Aaj and Dawn television news channels both reported that the militants were killed in a missile attack. Aaj put the number killed at 28.

possibly launched by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, killed at
least 32 pro-Taliban militants in a Pakistani tribal region
near the border on Tuesday, Pakistani officials said.

The missiles targeted a suspected training base in a village
near the mountainous Datta Khel district, 60 km (40 miles)
west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, the
officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they
are not authorised to brief the media, told Reuters.

Intelligence officials said some foreigners were among those
killed, raising the possibility that al Qaeda fighters might
have also been present. North Waziristan is a known refuge
for remnants of Osama bin Laden's network.

been an explosion in the area, but he denied it was caused
by missiles and added that the army had not carried out any

ISLAMABAD, June 20 (Reuters) - Several Uzbeks were among 32 militants killed in an apparent missile attack in a Pakistani tribal region on the Afghan border this week, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

Missiles, possibly fired by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, hit a suspected militant training base in a hamlet in the mountainous North Waziristan tribal region on Tuesday.

"Definitely, there are foreigners among the dead -- Uzbeks -- but at the moment I can't tell you how many," said a senior official who declined to be identified.

Pakistani military spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said there had been an explosion in the area but denied missiles caused it and said the army had not carried out any operations there.
