Denmark mulls fate of Iraqi helpers after troops withdraw
Source: Associated Press

COPENHAGEN, Denmark: As Denmark prepares to withdraw its troops from southern Iraq, the government is being pressed to provide shelter for the Iraqi interpreters and others who have assisted Danish troops in Basra.

The fate of the 21 Iraqis has triggered an emotional debate in Denmark, highlighting an ethical dilemma facing countries that are pulling back from Iraq: Is it OK to leave behind the Iraqis who risked their lives by helping coalition troops?

Denmark, which will withdraw its 460-strong contingent from Basra in the next two months, is preparing a plan on how to deal with the 21 civilians who have worked alongside Danish troops.

"A solution to their situation will be ready next week," Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen promised Thursday.

While it is not clear what that solution will be, many Danes — including soldiers who served in Iraq — say Denmark should grant asylum, or at least temporary shelter, to the Iraqis.

1. Evidence that this isn't a civil war.
Its not about religious strife. Anyone helping the US and its allies are being targeted for violence regardless of their religious or ethnic background. Its not a civil war. Its a rebellion against a foreign occupier, which means it will end as soon as we leave.

2. They should grant asylum

...then it's up to the Iraqis if they choose to accept.

Cheers

3. What are mulling over
it's only 21 and probably some family members, give them asylum, it's not like you have to open up your country to hundreds of thousands of Iraqis like Syria and Jordan have to do. Denmark need to accept their responsibilities, thats what they get for joining the criminal coalition.
