DETROIT, June 22 — The Delphi Corporation, the big auto supplier, reached a tentative agreement today with its unionized workers that will help it emerge from bankruptcy protection by cutting wages and benefits.
Members of the United Automobile Workers union are expected to vote next week on the deal, which comes about a month before the U.A.W. is scheduled to begin negotiations on a new contract with Detroit’s automakers. Delphi did not release details of the deal today; workers will gather Monday at their plants to find out how they will be affected.
The agreement was reached shortly before union leaders met with local chapter presidents at the U.A.W.’s General Motors training center in Detroit this afternoon. Those attending the meeting declined to comment as they left the complex along the Detroit River.
“If ratified, we believe this agreement will be a significant milestone in our transformation and a major step towards emergence,” John Sheehan, Delphi’s chief restructuring officer, said in a statement.
