(Updates death toll from Baiji bombing, adds details)

By Paul Tait

BAGHDAD, June 25 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed 18 people
and wounded 40 others when he rammed a fuel tanker into
protective walls outside a police headquarters in Iraq's northern
oil city of Baiji on Monday, police said.

In a separate attack south of Baghdad, police said eight people
died and 31 were wounded when a suicide car bomber struck
outside the governor's office in the Shi'ite city of Hilla.

Witnesses gave varying accounts of the Hilla attack. One said the
bomber detonated his vehicle next to a fence of the governor's
compound, while another said the blast happened at a checkpoint
outside.

U.S. and Iraqi officials blame most car bomb attacks in Iraq on
Sunni Islamist al Qaeda.

BAGHDAD, June 25 (Reuters) - Ten people were killed on Monday when
a suicide bomber wearing an explosives-packed vest blew himself up
inside a central Baghdad hotel used by foreigners and Iraqi officials,
police said.

Police said the bomber had walked into the busy lobby of the Mansour
Hotel, where Sunni Arab tribal leaders from western Anbar province
had gathered for a meeting.

Witnesses said the lobby was badly damaged. One witness said he had
seen seven bodies. Police said at least 15 people were wounded.

Large groups of Sunni tribal leaders in Anbar have joined forces to
form U.S.-backed provincial police units to fight against Sunni Islamist
al Qaeda, prompting a bloody power struggle in the vast desert region.

5. Surge of suicide blasts in Iraq kill 29
Surge of suicide blasts in Iraq kill 29 By BUSHRA JUHI, Associated Press Writer
33 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - A suicide bomber who penetrated layers of security blew himself up in the busy lobby of a leading Baghdad hotel on Monday, killing at least nine people, including a U.S.-allied tribal sheik, police reported.

The attack, in which 16 others were wounded, was just one in a surge of five suicide and other bombings Monday that killed at least 29 people across Iraq.

In an equally deadly attack, a suicide truck bomber targeted an Iraqi police station shared with U.S. troops in Beiji, 155 miles north of Baghdad, killing nine people. There were no American casualties in that blast, the U.S. command said.

The bombing at the high-rise Mansour Hotel, on the west bank of the Tigris River in central Baghdad, struck at about noon as the lobby bustled with members of news media organizations headquartered at the hotel and other guests, witnesses said.

6. Iraq bombers kill 40, sheikhs among hotel dead

It was one of four separate bombings across Iraq in which 40 people were killed.

Police said a bomber wearing a vest packed with explosives blew himself up after walking into the lobby of the Mansour Hotel, where Sunni Arab tribal leaders from western Anbar province had gathered for a meeting.

"According to initial reports, six sheikhs are among the dead," Lieutenant-Colonel Scott Bleichwehl, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, told Reuters.

(Updates death toll from northern Iraq attack)

By Paul Tait

BAGHDAD, June 25 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed six Iraqi tribal
leaders opposed to al Qaeda when he blew himself up at a busy
Baghdad hotel, in one of four attacks on Monday that killed 50 people
in all, police said.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said the hotel attack was in retaliation
against Sunni Arab tribal leaders who had joined U.S. and Iraqi forces
to fight al Qaeda because they were tired of its killing of Iraqis.

The U.S. military and Iraqi police said six tribal sheikhs were among
the dead.

Police said Fassal al-Igoud, a former Anbar governor, was the most
prominent of the tribal leaders killed. The number of Sunni sheikhs
killed could rise since some bodies had not yet been identified.
