(Fresno mayor) Autry quits mayors group over Iraq pullout vote
Source: Fresno Bee

Fresno Mayor Alan Autry resigned from a national organization of mayors Monday after the group voted to encourage the U.S. House of Representatives to pull American troops out of Iraq.

The United States Conference of Mayors, which wrapped up its annual meeting in Los Angeles today, voted 51-47 to support the immediate pullout of troops.

Autry voted against the resolution and immediately quit the group.

4. Not quite as bad as I thought it was...
<snip>
After resigning, Autry said he opposed the resolution because it was proposed by Providence, R.I., Mayor Vincent Cianci at the last minute and the mayors were not given adequate time to consider it.

“I have a lot of issues with the way this war has been run, but that’s not the issue,” Autry said in a phone interview. “The issue is: Do we send an arbitrary, ill-thought-out message? I believe we shouldn’t.”

15. Huh? Vincent Cianci and his rug went to prison in '02
he on corruption and racketeering charges; don't know about the rug. :P

The present mayor has the somewhat similar-sounding name, I guess, of David Cicilline. :eyes: So I guess the Fresno paper is just as Bush**-league as the Fresno mayor.

http://www.providenceri.com/government/mayor.php

Factoid: Cicilline is openly gay, making Providence the largest city in the land with an openly gay mayor.

13. Frickin dipshit jesus freak
In a city notorious for nutcase politics and poorly managed local government, this asshole stands out as one of the worst. He is clearly in the pocket of big money development interests and he maintains a disturbing bible belt mindset toward the blurring of the separation of church and state.

As much of an armpit as fresburg is, the residents deserve better than this bible thumping asswipe.

17. Fresno
has its problems just as any other city does, but there are a lot of fine people here trying to do a lot of fine things and we don't appreciate being referred to as an "armpit."

For the completely uninformed, here is an example of some of the very GOOD things we do here:

There are more many more examples but I doubt you'll even read the one I've referenced.

18. Lighten up - I grew up in Kings and Tulare counties
in some REAL armpits (ever heard of Goshen, Tipton or Corcoran?). My dad was an orphan from Oklahoma who caught a ride to CA with a preacher and his family in the 30's. When we were kids my mom used to take us to Fresno every smmer so we could buy school clothes and gawk at the tall buildings on what is now the Fulton mall. Except for a couple years in the US Army and a few more at college I've lived in the valley my entire life.

Right now I live in the sierra foothills about 1 hour north of Fresno and I get there a dozen times every year. Because of my work I had occasion to witness municipal government activities in Central Valley cities, and Fresno's city dads made some doozy mistakes over the years. Growth has been very poorly managed in most valley cities and Fresno probably worst of all because it has always been the largest.

But I think I know a bit more about the place than most folks. Fresno and I go back a long way. Like any other city of half a million people it has many fine citizens living there some of whom like yourself, actually care about things. Quality of life? Not so much. The air sucks, the ground water is contaminated (the city has shut down many of the municipal water wells due to contamination with DBCP) and the traffic is approaching SoCal levels.

Sorry if I offended you. Sometime I'll show you where I went to first grade so you can see what an armpit really looks like.

19. nice web site
I have a few relatives down that way. I used to live in the area as a kid. Now I'm up here in crime ridden Stockton. It's about as right wing as Fresno. I wish I lived closer to the bay area or down south around San Diego. Nicer weather and politics!

21. Believe it or not, Fresno is the most liberal city in the central valley
That's not saying much since it's still highly conservative, but for someone like me who lives in Bakersfield, it's saying a lot.

23. Some of the more northern cities are shifting left.
I've lived much of my life within 45 minutes of Modesto, and the city has shifted left noticeably over the past couple decades. In the newer sides of the city, the more moderate voters from the Bay Area are mellowing local politics a bit, and in the poorer parts of the city, the huge influx of Bay Area minorities priced out of the Bay real estate market has hugely increased minority activism in this city. When I was 15, I watched a Modesto police officer beat a homeless man bloody for the "crime" of falling asleep in a public park. There were dozens of people around, and nobody really cared. If that were to happen today, there would be thousands of people protesting.

The Valley is improving, but VERY slowly. I still get flipped off and cut off weekly for my BusHitler bumper sticker, and one of the most frequent questions I get when meeting new people is still "So where do you go to church?", but the KKK doesn't march in the local parades any more, and we have plenty of activists keeping the local Freepers from pushing too far nowadays.

24. I had an anti-Bush sticker on my truck once
Someone keyed my truck.

It's a common occurance in the valley to vehicles with anti-Bush stickers.

The rightwingers are pretty much cowards when it comes to that. But what do you expect when they can't debate their way out of a paper bag?

22. Autry is an idiot
We're glad we're in the Sierra foothills above Fresno, and only have to go down to Clovis for shopping. Now......if we could just figure out how to keep the Valley's pollution from drifting up here....

When we moved here 6 years ago, we were appalled to find that we had simply traded in one redneck small-minded scenario (Cincinnati, home of Marge Schott), for another. I mean, this is Calif., right? I guess it was the tradeoff for getting a reasonable cost of living here.
