Military Ends Halliburton Deal To Supply Gasoline to Iraq

By Jackie Spinner
Washington Post Staff Writer

The Pentagon said yesterday that it will end an arrangement with Halliburton Co. to import fuel to Iraq, a contract that had been criticized by government auditors and Democratic members of Congress.

A military unit that already supplies fuel to the armed forces in Iraq will assume control of the import and distribution of gasoline, kerosene and cooking gas into the country and will find new private contractors through competitive bidding, the Defense Energy Support Center announced.

Pentagon officials said that the change had been under discussion for months and that the timing was not related to allegations that KBR, the Halliburton subsidiary that held the contract, had overcharged the government at least $61 million by buying more expensive fuel from Kuwait instead of Turkey.

So far KBR has received about $2.2 billion in work orders under the oil infrastructure contract, including more than $800 million to import and distribute fuel. The interim government in Iraq has mostly paid KBR for the fuel with money from seized Iraqi assets and from selling crude oil.

So they intended to change for months....how conveeenient...or just more lies. Shrub is trying to dump the deadwood for the election.

On edit: Didn't shrub say they should pay $$$$ back for overcharging...let's watch this happen -- not.

2. Yeah, right. Somehow I'm willing to bet a Halliburton subcontractor
will get the work. Why doesn't the Bush* administration let the Iraqis take over here? And I don't mean Chalabi's governing council.

4. This is all well and good...
but we'll never know just how much was paid under this contract nor how much was not delivered. My guess is Halliburton isn't going to get the short end of this stick.

5. Does anyone see the pattern on this?
Each item Dem think they will use on Bush is being 'fixed' before anyone starts to run. Bush worked with Lee (SP. Name) Atwater who was the man that helped the GOP so, before he died. Do not over look Carl and Bush in this. They know how to play the game.

7. This is my favorite bit

LOL of course allegations of overcharging had nothing to do with it, we're talking about the pentagon.

Imagine a social services agency with the Pentagon buget.

9. They were discussing changes for quite some time. Remember, all
those convienent delays in reissuing the contracts? Now that there is big trouble - no more delays. They were pushing back with delays for as long as they could.
Watch there could still be more delays.

8. Just another sign that democrats
are starting to finally show some intestinal fortitude. No matter how you look at this one it is a huge blow to halliburton and to the bush administration's goal of making themselves richer.

10. This, of course, should in no way means they did anything wrong

Just because the Pentgon did an audit and did indeed find that they were price gouging the American people and war profiteering but that has nothing to do with the contract being yanked from right under their feet. Nope nothing at all.
