Pontiff calls for "new international order"
Pope John Paul has called for a "new international order" to solve the world's conflicts and ensure peace in his New Year's Day address.

The ghosts of a year that saw the United States invade Iraq without United Nations approval dominated the pontiff's first speech of the year.

The 83-year-old made his speech at a mass in St Peter's Basilica.

He said: "More than ever we need a new international order which draws on the experience and results of the United Nations.

"An order which is capable of finding adequate solutions to today's problems, based on the dignity of human beings, on integrating all society, on solidarity between rich and poor countries, on the sharing of resources and the extraordinary results of scientific and technological progress."

I took it that the Pope urged more dependence on the UN. Sounds to me like he was 'politely' denouncing us for going to war without UN approval.

Yep, that is what the Pope is doing here. I agreed with him when he told * not to go to Iraq because he goes without God and I agree with Pope John Paul II once again!

12. because Catholics stand in opposition to freepers' "little" racially
Edited on Thu Jan-01-04 06:38 PM by amen1234
segregated WHITE and rich churches, that spend NO MONEY for social improvement in their communities, even though surrounded by the poverty that they created....

Catholics spend a LOT of money on the poor, the soup-kitchens, housing and medical care for the indigent....Catholics walk in PEACE marches, with unions, with farmworkers....

"most freepers hate the Pope"...and I am certain that the Pope is praying for them, which drives them insane....the Pope even forgave the guy who shot him in Poland, going with mercy to the criminal's jail cell to forgive him and bless him.....

They must be confused at this ... il Papi doesn't agree with their golden boy, George ?

17. they are hypocrites
That is how I view Catholics that are pro-war. If they still attend Church and pray and do the peace be with you thing and pray for peace, they are HYPOCRITES plain and simple.

It took the local priest here awhile to realize it himself. At least he woke up or perhaps the Archbishop had a word or two with him about it - ?

We actually argued about it several months ago. Seems I won doesn't it because something happened after the Pope can out and said the thing about Iraq/God/Bush. :O8):

15. what I've noticed ...
Seems attendance at Mass is way down since the local priest changed his stance and stopped saying in the prayers, "May God bless President Bush." Last time I heard him make a political statement was on Ash Wed. when he said, "Some are getting "mixed messages" and we must pray for them."

I had been boycotting the Church for awhile. Now I've been back a few times and it seems the rich white people aren't going there anymore. However, the rest of "us" are still around like it or not!

19. the Catholic Church does not endorse political candidates....
Edited on Thu Jan-01-04 08:50 PM by amen1234

they would loose their non-profit, no-tax status...

when the priest says: "May God bless pResident bush"....that's a big
maybe/maybe not....he is asking God to do it, and God makes the final decide...the final decision may bode ill for the shrub....my priest often says "God bless you" as I leave Church, meaning that he is using his power, representing God, to directly confer God's blessing upon me...for bush*, your priest is saying that he cannot really do it, so he's sending the request up to a higher level department....

but I am not offended if any priest blesses anybody and everybody, including the pResident...the Pope went to the cell of the man who shot him in Poland...and forgave him and prayed for him and blessed him....priests bless people even after they die...Catholic priests go to the most horrible incarcerated criminals and bless them and pray for them, the Pope frequently blesses the WHOLE WIDE WORLD in 27 languages right from his balcony, and IMO, that includes the shrub...

in my Catholic Church...every Sunday, we pray for the pResident, and his staff and all our government officials...that they may become enlightened to the devastation they are creating, that they may change course away from war, that they may awakened to their responsibilities, and begin to use the power, that we have given them, in a just and merciful manner....AMEN....and then the priest gives blessings....

and everybody in my Catholic Church is working to SHOW BUSH THE DOOR in 2004....we talk about it in the parking lot after Mass a lot and then meet for breakfast to plan our strategies...

5. I believe you misunderstood .......
Pope:
"More than ever we need a new international order which draws on the experience and results of the United Nations."

I believe that with this quote he is saying that the UN is
the process of the new international order.

The UN has proven to be right in handling the conflict with
Iraq.
Meanwhile, the US bully unilateral approach was wrong.

18. I read the "order" meant to refer to balance of power (eg not one
superpower) - and that the new power would use the tools of the UN more.

4. "Sharing of resources..." WTF! Why.... That's positively socialistic!
And amazingly Christian-like. Thumbs up for the Pope on his sentiments.

Question for Catholics: Any chance of the next pope being named "George Ringo?" It would be so cool in lists of the Popes for Beatle fans.

Though as a catholic and a beatles fan it would be kinda neat. I was very proud of my faith when the Pope spoke out and it made me feel vindicated in a way that DU alone could not. In a time when american fundies were crying out for bombs and blood I was comforted to hear my spiritual leader, along with the Dali Lama and others, speaking out with the voice of reason.

9. Darn. I was afraid of that.
I guess it might be considered bad form naming Pontiffs after popular musicians.

(tongue firmly in cheek)

Pope Puff Daddy would really be hard to take seriously.
