Republican Hal Daub on Monday became the latest Nebraskan to inch closer to a bid for the U.S. Senate.
The former Omaha mayor resigned as Republican Party national committeeman, saying he wanted to avoid a conflict of interest if he decides to run for the Senate next year.
Daub is the latest person to position himself for a quick leap into the fray should Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel decide not to seek a third term.
Hagel has not been aggressively raising money for a re-election bid, nor did he spend much time in Nebraska during Congress' August recess. He has said he intends to announce soon whether he will seek re-election, run for president or retire from politics.
