WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Anti-war rhetoric, savvy use of the Internet and fund-raising prowess transformed Howard Dean -- an obscure but outspoken former governor -- from underdog to top dog in the Democratic presidential race.

His bluntness, impulsiveness, imprecise statements and lack of foreign policy experience also have critics questioning his readiness to lead and whether he can beat President Bush in post-Sept. 11 America.

"I didn't expect to be in this position," Dean said aboard his campaign plane recently. "I didn't expect to have all the other candidates flailing away at me. I didn't expect to be the front-runner."

A doctor who swapped a family practice for 11 years as governor of tiny Vermont -- 49th of 50 states in population, 96 percent white -- Dean says his presidential bid was initially spurred by anger.

"I was reading in the newspaper about something Bush had done that made me mad and I said, 'Are you just going to sit here and complain or are you going to do something about it?"'

,...but does read like an editorial. Perhaps this piece demonstrates the trend by reporters to go "sexy" or "appealing" rather than work harder at objective reporting, allowing the public to decide. A sign of the times, I guess,...with ratings towards profits having taken over the importance of integrity and objectivity towards the noble goal of serving the public.

Come on, did anyone really think that in January of 2003 Dean would be the front-runner by the end of the year? I sure didn't and I was a supporter.

I'm sure Dean thought he had a chance, but didn't expect to be a frunt-runner.

5. They use it correctly in the 1st sentence

"Democratic" is used correctly in the very first sentence of the article, so there is no doubt that they used it incorrectly on purpose in the headline.

And it only took the second sentence before they used the dead Americans of 911 for Bush's political gain in an election.

And in just the little you posted here, they use almost every single Republican meme there is against the Democratic candidate.


Isnt it just amazing how the media can use "Anti-war rhetoric" about an "obscure" "outspoken" "Democrat" candidate.
The media uses "bluntness", "impulsiveness", "imprecise statements" and they have a "lack of foreign policy experience"

The media criticizes "tiny Vermont" that is "49th of 50 states in population" and not only that its "96 percent white".

I think they draw up the headlines, not the writers of the articles.

they should have labeled that article as an editorial, and a Reuters editor should have corrected that RNC-inspired headline.

13. Editors write headlines ... not writers

Writers can suggest headlines, but normally it is an editor who writes them.

There is an epidemic right now of editorial comment in headline that show pro-Bush bias and bear little resemblance to the actual words in the article.

Always watch the headline for slant...

It's usually the case of an editor trying to get his bias into the story.

As an editor, I've seen it many times... and have in fact done it myself.
