Dean to make surprise visit to N.H.

Bradley endorsement expected

NEW HAMPTON, Iowa -- Howard Dean, whose presidential campaign has already won the backing of former vice president Al Gore, is planning a surprise visit to New Hampshire Tuesday in expectation of receiving the endorsement of the other leading Democratic contender from the 2000 race, former US senator Bill Bradley.

Democrats in New Hampshire and other parts of New England have been invited to a previously unscheduled appearance by Dean in Manchester for what is being billed as "a very special breakfast'' at which "a surprise endorsement is in store.'' Dean had been scheduled to attend a pancake breakfast in Muscatine, Iowa, about the same time, before participating in a candidate forum in Des Moines in the early afternoon.

A senior aide traveling early this morning with Dean in northern Iowa authenticated the invitation but refused to say that Bradley was planning to endorse Dean, explaining, "Nothing is confirmed at this point.'' The aide acknowledged that scrapping the early-morning event in Iowa, whose kickoff caucuses are two weeks from tonight, Monday would be unusual, particularly on the day of a debate, but the aide explained, "It wouldn't be the only wacky thing we've done in this campaign.'' Dean is expected to fly back to Des Moines to participate in the candidate forum.

The endorsement would also provide a last-minute tweak to Dean's main rival in New Hampshire, Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts. His New Hampshire campaign is led by former governor Jeanne Shaheen and her husband, William, and aided by former Gore aide Michael J. Whouley of Boston's Dewey Square Group. All three of them were credited with Bradley's last-minute defeat in New Hampshire.

Asked about Kerry by sfpolitics.com, Bradley said only: "Well, let's go on.''

10. Congrats to Dean, but...

...I worked as a volunteer for Bradley in 2000 and it had to be the most unorganized campaign I'd ever worked for. Some of the biggest problems were email alerts that sent to hundreds of people the wrong address where Bradley was going to speak. There were other problems as well.

What a disappointment it was...

at the convention, Bradley stood up and said of Gore "I endorse him and I'll work hard for him." It was very classy.
This could turn out to be a sort of symbolic endorsement that could go a long way towards curbing the ugliness that has emerged in this race.

stood up and endorsed Gore 'will work hard for him,' yet Bradley took off back to his job and never again appeared nor campaigned for Gore. But, having Bradley on Dean's side is great. I've never liked Bradley.

Gore endorsed Dean as part of a power struggle with the Clintons over leadership of the party. That, and the whole Internet geek thing. Makes me nervous.

I'm in the "We're Screwed if We Nominate Dean" camp.

I voted for Bradley in the primary in 2000. His endorsement of Dean just makes me heave a big, frustrated sigh.

My prediction:

We'll nominate Dean. He'll implode. GW will be re-elected, with a big, stupid smirk on his face. He'll use his second four-year term to hopelessly EFF UP everything he touches, completely alienating the electorate.

Hillary will (despite the current rumors swirling to the contrary) stay married to Bill, despite reports he's been squiring lots and lots of young, cute women around New York.

Gore will have shot himself in the foot by endorsing Dean. Clintons will emerge as the undisputed heads of the party. And Hillary will have a good shot at winning the White House in 2008.

I'll be THRILLED to eat my words, and kiss the feet of the Dean supporters, if I'm wrong and he gets elected. Because GW has got to go!

30. Yes, even Ronald Reagan Jr has now endorsed Democrats over Bush

I spoke to someone tonight who saw Ron Reagan Jr on a talking head show tonight. He is for Dean too. Sounds like he is for ANY Democrat over another 4 for Junior*. They said he said something like:

"The worst possible thing that could happen in this country is 4 more years of George *W. Bush."

That's pretty bad for the GOP when even the spawn of Gipper is voting Democratic this year.
