(UK) Emergency powers plan published
Sweeping new powers to tackle major terror attacks and other emergencies, have been proposed by ministers.

Ministers insist new powers are needed to cope with modern threats ranging from terrorism to foot-and-mouth disease to an attack on the internet.

But an influential parliamentary committee and civil rights groups have already warned that some of planned measures threaten human rights.

SUMMARY OF KEY POWERS IN DRAFT BILL:

Ministers will be able to bypass Parliament to make emergency regulations
Police will be able to ban public gatherings, impose curfews, seize property
The Human Rights Act could be suspended

Translation: shut up and listen to what the government tells you is good for you. Don't expect your representative to have any power at all - they just get in the way.

1. Would cause an interesting crisis with Monachy
All laws have to be approved by the monarch before they go into effect. It's been a ceremonial duty for more than a century, but it's still something that must be done. The monarch must sign a law before it goes into effect.

Suddenly the English monarchy wields power in the UK again. They could stall "disappear" and not sign some legislation until the Parliment gets a chance to meet and review emergency actions ordered.
