follow up on audit...done deal

Wed January 7, 2004 06:16 PM ET

By Sue Pleming

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pentagon auditors said on Wednesday they expected soon to receive documents from the Army that Halliburton paid fair prices for fuel brought into Iraq, squashing price-gouging allegations against Vice President Dick Cheney's former company.

The Defense Contract Audit Agency said Army Corps of Engineers officials overseeing the oil contract had promised a "business case" that showed prices billed by Halliburton unit Kellogg Brown and Root for fuel delivered by a subcontractor were "fair and reasonable" and the issue would then be closed.

Asked whether that meant price-gouging claims would be dropped against the company if the Army Corps document said pricing was fair, a defense official said that was the case."We will consider the $61.7 million fuel-pricing issue as being resolved," said the spokesman.

Last month, a draft Pentagon audit found evidence KBR may have overcharged the Army Corps of Engineers by $61.7 million for fuel brought into Iraq via a Kuwaiti subcontractor called Altanmia Commercial Marketing Company.

move along. What about the overcharging for supplies, etc.? That gonna go away too? on edit: Why are they suddenly so anxious to bid this job out if Halliburton is doing such a great job?

2. Crock of Crap
I have been critical of the "wacky conspiracy theories" but I am starting to wonder if I am naive. This whole Haliburton deal stinks to high heaven and so quickly we have the Pentagon rushing to their defense? If I were a Democratic adviser I would be telling my guy to pound away at the "Good Old Boy" club that leads to Enron and Haliburton excesses. Americans are about to wake up to this whole mess. I am a moderate and starting to go left the more I read about the lies. I am getting sick of the lies.

6. Good Ole Boy Club hits it right...
a long established system which the repugs manage extremely well.

Another thread is looking at the recently floated idea of a "national" Iraq oil company (not bad on its face)...and mentions the possibility that foreign interests would be curtailed under the national umbrella...

I say, the devil is in the details...if it comes down, look at the contractual arrangements ,"investor" interests and board of directors ...that's how they work.
