bush seeks manned flight to moon, mars
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/08/bush/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush plans a major policy speech next week in which he'll promote a new space initiative, senior administration officials said Thursday.

Bush will lay out his "vision for expanding the space program," which is expected to include long-term moves for manned missions to the moon and an eventual manned mission to Mars, an official said. NASA's target for a moon mission is 2018.

not sure if he's recycling Kennedy's challenge or Ralph Cramden's threats...

I'm all for a moon landing, if Bush* & Co. are on the ship and it's a one way trip.

on edit: over the past year, and on more than one occassion, I posted comments about the need for a national goal. One of the suggestions was a manned-mars landing.

I pointed out how going to the moon lead to new technologies, and that this helped our economy as well as our lives - additionally it would give us all something to rally around and could be a unifying issue

Seems to me that Bush* Inc. may have been reading these posts -- if so watch for these talking points when Bush* reads his speech and moons America
- new technologies
- national goal
- new jobs
- boosting the economy
- American Pride
- how the world our determination to work towards a peaceful future

(I had also suggested a national goal of breaking the oil habit and developing alternate fuel sources - but that would cut into Bush*'s buddies profits)

10. The target date
for the moon is 2018?????

This is ridiculous. We could walk the moon again in 2008 at the latest if we tried. Mars is so much harder to do than the moon is I have to wonder what the target date for that might be. 2060?

I'm betting they have some ulterior motive for restarting the manned space program. It clearly isn't getting to the moon or to Mars, though they seem to be serving as cover. A weapons program?
