Scientist warns of warming's effect on Va. (the Bay and terrorists)
Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

NASA researcher says rising sea levels could flood Hampton Roads

The sea level could rise 2 to 5 feet by the end of this century and flood parts of Norfolk, Virginia Beach and other low-lying places in Virginia, a key state scientist says.

Wielicki spoke Thursday during a global-warming forum at the College of William and Mary and in follow-up interviews Thursday and Friday.

During the forum, speakers said global warming could further damage the Chesapeake Bay, hurt farmers and even aid terrorists.

Lawrence P. Farrell Jr., a retired Air Force lieutenant general, is part of a group of former military leaders warning about global warming's threat to national security. He said warming-related droughts and floods could push struggling countries into instability, opening the door for terrorists to spread their influence.

The Pentagon’s report on global warming

Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate change will destroy us
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,1153513,00.html

The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. The threat to global stability vastly eclipses that of terrorism, say the few experts privy to its contents.

2. Yep, Virginia, Florida, all of those coastal states will be going under
Including NYC, San Fran and D.C. There's going to be a massive migration to the "flyover" states, where these populations will not be welcome. There will be conflict and blood on the streets as you try to fit a couple of hungred million people into an area that doesn't have that sort of carrying capacity. Think New Orleans multiplied ten times over.

3. buy real estate in detroit NOW.
Detroit is poised to become a very important city in the post-sea-level-rise world. it sits 581 feet above sea level, on an international border, and LOTS of fresh water.

8. nah, buy property in Sac./S. Joaquin Valley
above 100' elevation: new bay front property...;-)

Don't worry, most of CA is far enough above sea level that we won't need to move to the mid-west. SF and LA basin will be gone, but, hey, whatever.

...not worrying up here at 1328'...

5. Alexandria Virginia would suffer too
all the most beautiful and historic areas of Alexandria are subject to coastal flooding now and would be greatly affected.

9. All of human settlement is around water

this affects the coasts most directly but any city on water (which is all of them) are effected.

for instance about 40% of Roanoke is on a flood plain.

7. Tony Snow was demanding that bush gets credit for this. The whole GOP
should take a bow for stonewalling efforts to address climate change decades ago, as well as pillaging our treasury for their cronies, leaving us without funds to address other issues. Mission accomplished.
