Gore Beats Bush as Bali Talks Embrace Nobel Winner's Agenda

Seven years after he lost the U.S. election, Al Gore has more influence on U.S. global warming policy than the man who defeated him, President George W. Bush.

Anticipating the post-Bush diplomatic era, a shadow delegation of American business and political leaders will advocate mandatory limits. The conference opening today and running two weeks is intended to help set the stage for more than two years of negotiations on a treaty that would replace the emissions-limiting Kyoto Protocol when it expires in 2012. Bush walked away from the Kyoto accord in 2001 without offering an alternative.

The unofficial U.S. group in Bali will include the former Vice President Gore, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change, and Democratic Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, whom Bush defeated for re-election in 2004. Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who favors limits and the trading of carbon-emission credits, may also attend.

``Clearly, the U.S. position is much more advanced than the White House position,'' says economist Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York and a special adviser to the UN. ``They are there in case the White House really does try to pull a fast one because there's so little trust.''

even if he did win the White HOuse in 2000, he was meant to be at this point today. After all the years of being grinded by the m$$$$m it must be very gratifying to realize your dream of being heard on our Environment. I know it is for me.

I always loved that intro. I think it affected a lot of us in our belief that there really is such a thing as "truth, justice, and the American Way," and that they are inextricably linked.

Mild-mannered Mr. Gore is but a mortal from our very own planet, but he sure does continue to fight the good fight. It is fabulous to see him get the good recognition he so richly deserves.

20. I agree that the Superman intro influenced

many boomers. Something about 'catapulting the propaganda?' I also think those old westerns influenced many of us w/ a sense of justice. How the good sheriff was always able to stand up to the drunken lynch mob and talk them down. I know I can trace my sense of what is right and just to those old movies. I was a big Hopalong Cassidy fan. His stories often dealt with justice problems.
