SANTA CRUZ — Presidential candidate Howard Dean can claim something of a first victory in the primary season now that he’s bested his Democratic competitors at an Iowa-style caucus in Santa Cruz.
The former Vermont governor, who has landed high-profile, national endorsements in recent weeks, beat his competitors Saturday during an event that was part caucus and part Democratic rally.

At Saturday’s event, Dean garnered 183 votes. Former Cleveland mayor and now U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich came in second with 126 votes, followed by: retired Gen. Wesley Clark with 111; U.S. Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts with 10; U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina with 6; former U.S. Sen. Carol Mosley Braun of Illinois with four and Rev. Al Sharpton of New York with one vote. U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman and U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt received no votes.

One small step for the Dean campaign, one giant step for Santa Cruz Dean supporters. Congratulations. And a very nice place to vacation in California I might add. Very progressive.
