(Ohio) 5th Congressional District Election Results
Source: WTOL

Results are coming in for the Fifth Congressional District election in which Democrat Robin Weirauch squared off against Republican Bob Latta.

With 13 precincts reporting, Bob Latta has 1,402 votes, and Robin Weirauch has 1,123.

Folks went to the polls to select a replacement for Paul Gillmor who unexpectedly died several months ago.

At least, some voters made a choice. Simply put: Voter turnout was pretty low. Some could have forgotten, and others might simply have been put off by inclement weather.

2. Republicans always win light turnout elections
Not that Democrats always win heavy turnout elections, because that's not the case either.

But light turnout always means a Republican victory.

10. This district hasn't voted Democrat since the 30's. Turnout won't help.
It's a Republican lifetime seat. Wasn't even competitive when the last Republican changed over in 1988.

This was a lot better than normal, but you're still not winning this sort of seat.

4. Let them. If they crow about winning a traditional Repub. seat in a special election, so be it.
This seat has been Republican forever.

7. Former Ohio congressman's son elected to fill dad's old seat (OH-5)
Source: WTOL

TOLEDO (AP) -- Republican state representative Bob Latta has been elected to fill a vacant congressional seat in northwest Ohio.

The Associated Press called the race for Latta just before 9 p.m. With 65 percent of precincts reporting, Latta had 56 percent of the vote, compared to 44 percent for Democratic candidate Robin Weirauch.

Latta will replace the late Paul Gillmor, who died in September from a fall at his Washington apartment. Latta's father, Delbert, held the conservative and traditionally Republican 5th district seat from 1959 until 1989.

The 51-year-old Latta won the GOP nomination November 6th following a bruising primary campaign with state Senator Steve Buehrer.
