Globe endorses McCain, Obama (news story)
Source: Boston.com

Senators Barack Obama and John McCain have been endorsed by The Boston Globe editorial board ahead of the first-in-the-nation presidential primary on Jan. 8 in New Hampshire.

The board wrote that Obama, the Illinois Democrat, fulfills America's need for "a president with an intuitive sense of the wider world,'' and that McCain, the Arizona Republican, ''has done more than his share to transcend partisanship and promote an honest discussion of the problems facing the United States.''

The newspaper released early excerpts of its McCain and Obama endorsements, which will be published in full in Sunday's Globe and on Boston.com. The endorsements followed in-depth interviews with the presidential contenders.

This is very significant news. The Globe has a very large readership in New Hampshire, particularly among Democrats and Independents in the densely populated suburbs in Rockingham and Hillsborough Counties. It's also a surprise. Most people assumed that Hillary Clinton was going to receive the nod.

The Obama endorsement itself is at

1. Exhibit "A" for the argument to take away the two state lock on the primary.

For the republicans the choice, a past "straight talking" guy that amazingly had moderate Democrats in his corner till the infamous ass-kissing photo with a trained monkey.

For us Democrats the odious choice of a tedious, triangulating, future Carter President if elected,(which is highly doubtfull)among a crowd of candidates that for the exception of Edwards is nauseating.

2. Anyone who finds the Globe's choice of Obama surprising hasn't been paying attention.
The big story here is McCain over Romney.

4. Actually, it is a surprise
Several of the Globe's op/ed columnists, especially Peter Cannellos and Ellen Goodman, have been puffing up Hillary for the entire campaign. Joan Venocchi has been all over the map, and Scott Lehigh clearly likes Biden. The news coverage has been very pro-Clinton.

My guess is that editorial writer Renee Loth was the one who pushed for Obama.

The rejection of Romney isn't a bit surprising. The Globe has never cared for Romney. They endorsed his opponent in 2002, and did a pretty good job of holding his feet to the fire when he was governor.

3. NY Times owns Globe now . . . right?
Has the NY Times ordained anyone yet?

I'd look at it as mischief making --- rejection of Clinton will have impact ---

and I think Obama would be a failed candidate ---

As for Repugs --- McCain is certainly emblematic of their coarse, disgusting ideals ----
