Source: Dept. of Defense

J. Walter Thompson, Atlanta, Ga., is being awarded an $81,588,102 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for marketing and advertising services in support of the Marine Corps Recruiting Command advertising program. This contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $750,000,000. Work will be performed primarily in Atlanta, Ga., and various locations yet to be determined. Work is expected to be completed Sep. 2012. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic Commerce Online site, with one proposal received.

Article lists many of the contracts awarded such as $17 mil for bullets used in training. Nice to have unlimited amounts of taxpayer dollars with which to play around. So many awards are no bid/one bid awards.

the Marines are the one that really has no need to advertise.

9. So they want to entice more of Georgia's impoverished youths
to fight in this bloody war. We could use that money to provide health care for them instead. Maybe our Governor will hold a prayer meeting for that too.

10. Someone break this down for me.
How much per recruit does this work out to? How many people enlist in the Marines every year? This contract lasts for only five years, too, which really makes me wonder. Couldn't they take that much money and pay the insurgents not to place IEDs in the road?

11. One proposal? That doesn't seem right...
Ad agencies would be breaking down the doors to get at that type of money.

12. When they want to fix a contract...
They simply write the specs so that no one else can meet the requirements.

13. J. Walter Thompson (JWT) is owned by WPP ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WPP_Group

... the same global PR perception management corporation which owns Hill & Knowlton (one of the companies which helped 'PR' public opinion for Poppy's Gulf War http://www.prwatch.org/books/tsigfy10.html; and, where the former Pentagon spokesperson for Rumsfield's Pentagon worked, Victoria Clarke (now at Comcast). Of course, she didn't really leave the Pentagon, she was put on the Defense Policy Board, at least, until last year. http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/dod/dpbmembers.html

WPP, also, owns Burson-Marsteller which has been discussed here at DU (Mark Penn).

16. I saw that linked over at Kos...
This is appalling. Thanks for posting it here.

The Marines look for roughly 32,000 recruits per year. This contract, works out to $5859.37 per recruit per year for four years. Just for advertising.

Heroes that will shot ten year old kids trying to seek medical help at an Iraqi hospital. Remember they are doing this in your name. Christmas has been canceled in Amerika, as Christ has left the nation that kills kids!!!
