Republican Mike Huckabee took his turn Wednesday, going on a pheasant hunt in Osceola, Iowa during which the Arkansas governor made it clear he is no stranger to the great outdoors.

"Maybe it will show that I certainly understand the culture of being outdoors," he said of the expedition. "It's not something we had to go out and get a primer in. It's very much ordinary to me."

"Don't get in my way," he said while pointing to the three dead birds.

"This is what happens…You vote for me, you live. You don't…there you go."

they go hunting just before an election.

Now I have nothing against hunting although I don't hunt. Actually, I like guns. People have called me a gun nut but I prefer to be called a gun enthusiast Target shooting with handguns has been my favorite hobby for years. I even have a concealed carry permit and I carry.

So why am I not impressed that Mike Huckabee went hunting. Probably for the same reason that I failed to be impressed when John Kerry also went pheasant hunting in Iowa. Somehow I get the feeling that they were both trying to get votes rather than birds. Why else would they drag the media along for a photo op?

And of course, I remember Dick Cheney and his embarrassing accident while hunting quail.

Now I know that a lot of people would consider me and a lot of my friends unintelligent because of our interest in firearms. We are not Rhodes scholars by any means, but we can recognize pandering when we see it.

My opinion is that politicians and guns don't mix...especially when birds are involved.

I just hope that Hillary or Obama don't try hunting. I might just throw up.
