The Miami Herald to outsource ad work to India
Source: AP

December 27, 2007 3:24 PM ET

MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Herald is outsourcing some of its advertising production work to India.

Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal says starting in January, copyediting and design in a weekly section of Broward County community news and other special advertising sections will be outsourced to Mindworks, based in New Delhi.

The project is still in the testing phase, so there is no immediate impact on staff.

Mindworks will also monitor reader comments posted to online stories.

1. No Immediate Impact On Staff
in other words, they get to keep their jobs until the India staff has been fully trained to do those jobs.

Ass wipes, if I lived in Miami and subscribed to the paper, I'd cancel.

4. Mindworks will monitor reader comments?
Will they censor comments by readers about them?

8. many sites (including DU)
moderate online postings to prevent stupid, abusive, off topic and otherwise useless comments out of their online discussions.

While this can be viewed as a form of censorship, as the Miami Herald (and it's website) are private concerns they can choose to edit (via deletion) any posts they deem inappropriate.

Reflect upon that when you see the "post deleted" mark in a discussion thread and wonder what DU would look like without that ability/right.

9. Inappropriate postings are monitored mostly by the moderators with
the help of others using the alert button.

6. the advertising industry in india is robust and well developed but its extremely hard to market to
another culture.

unless they find people who were educated here, i suspect this will lead to funny adds.

7. The least they could have done was outsource it to Cuba.
Mass cancellations and boycotting works for me.

10. This is exactly the work I used to do
>>Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal says starting in January, copyediting and design in a weekly section of Broward County community news and other special advertising sections will be outsourced to Mindworks, based in New Delhi.>>

This won't be kept to just ads.

Right now I do freelance work for a publisher, which complements my meagre -- and I DO mean meagre -- social-service salary. I was thinking about trying to start my own business in order to draw a more diversified client base and hopefully get out of the line of work I am in, but really, what is the point?
