Congressman Meek endorses Penelas for U.S. Senate

U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek endorsed Alex Penelas for the U.S. Senate today, saying the Miami-Dade mayor is the Democrat best positioned to win a general election.

The Miami congressman's endorsement comes just three days after his fellow congressman, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, endorsed Penelas's rival, U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch, D-Pembroke Pines.

Meek said the Cuban-American mayor, who like Meek championed an education initiative on the 2002 ballot, can appeal to independents and moderate Republicans.

''I look at it as the winnability of Alex Penelas, versus the other candidates,'' Meek said. ``He's on top of stack when it comes to pulling primary and general election votes.''

Apparently Meek doesn't remember the damage Penelas did to President Gore during his campaign and the Miami-Dade vote non-recount. THAT wasn't very Democratic of Penelas.

Just a couple of weeks ago he made a statement about what a wonderful job the police did during the FTAA protests in Miami.

Tear-gassing, pepper-spraying, shooting non-violent protesters, many of whom were retired and elderly union members.

You cooked your own goose Alex. Most of those people involved were Florida Democrats. Did you notice that most of the audience left before you spoke at the Florida Convention on Sunday morning?

But I heard Deutsch speak at the Florida Convention, and I have to give anyone with a 100% pro-labor voting record a look. Betty Castor is also very good, with a statewide following.

Conventional wisdom says Penelas and Deutsch will kick the crap out of each other and Betty will take the primary, but she's one very sharp woman.

5. I'm not a Floridian, but I've read DU'ers who are

who say Betty Castor has a lot of name recognition in Florida.

Is there anything important out-of-state Democrats need to know about her?

Anyone (Democratic) who can beat Katherine Harris and Alex Penelas would have our undying gratitude.
