Huckabee: Evangelical Christians Now Have a Chance to Lead GOP
Source: Washington Post

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Jan. 12 -- Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee touted his candidacy Saturday as a chance for evangelical Christians to lead the Republican Party rather than just support its candidates.

"I don't presume that you automatically support me because of a common faith," Huckabee told a group of more than 100 conservative pastors. "I know I have to earn that. But I also recognize that there is a unique kind of opportunity. For a long time, those of us who are people of faith are asked to support candidates who would come and talk to us. But rarely has there been one who comes from us."

Huckabee's comments were the latest attempt by the former Baptist preacher to rally support from social conservatives by advocating a larger role for them within the GOP.

Last month in Iowa, Huckabee noted the criticism against him for supporting tax increases while governor of Arkansas, and he said the "Washington establishment" was opposed to his candidacy in a party where social conservatives often do not wield the same power as do small-government conservatives.

While I'd love to have him as the GOP candidate, if he's going to spout stuff like this the party establishment will never give him a chance.

Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 03:39 PM by Johnny Noshoes
I am so damn tired of these candidates trying to out Jesus each other in this election. They're running for President NOT national pastor. I don't give a damn what your religious beliefs are and those beliefs are NO guarantee that you'll behave yourself once you gain the Presidency. Just ONCE I'd love to see an atheist who happens to be the best person for the Presidency actually run and WIN. It would be a breakthrough moment for America.

Jesus is coming. Look busy!

66. I have never heard so much religious talk in an election in my life.
America is clearly moving backwards, "led" by an small, illegitimate fringe minority of very loud religious wackos. The situation is intolerable for real Americans.

The funny thing about it is, the Republican positions on the issues are all just about as far from Jesus as you can possibly get! I guess that doesn't matter to the mindless True Believers on the right.

The words are "Jesus", the actions pure Satan.

3. Is he a Dominionist? The Dominionist wants to control the US by first
controlling the GOP, then the US. From there they plan on extending their dominance around the world.

Read this:

We should see if he has any connection to this dangerous cult.

18. Diebold and ES&S have ties with the Reconstructionist.
Bob and Todd Urosevich were funded by the Ahmanson's. They coded the voting machines from Diebold and ES&S.

It all comes down to Ahmanson. He is the money man behind the theocratic movement in America. If we can tie him to Huckabee, that would be nice. I think Abramoff could be tied to Ahmanson.

21. How about preaching twice at Hagee's church while running for president?
EDIT

John Hagee is a Christian Zionist and televangelist. He's known for his books Jerusalem Countdown and more recently In Defense of Israel, a pair of books that make outlandish and fear-based claims about end times and biblical predictions. Like Huckabee, Hagee purports to know the very will of God in order to further his own agenda. In older days these type of men were known as charlatans, now-a-days we call them leaders in the Christian Right.

Hagee's evil beliefs are based on a twisted theology of fundamental dispensationalism is comprised of the belief that the nation state Israel is the fulfillment of Bible prophesy and that thus, it deserves full political and military support from the US. But any friendly gestures from the likes of Christian Zionists like Hagee or Pat Robertson are merely formalities, because the ultimate prediction is Armageddon VIA nuclear war and the conversion of the Jews that survive or some such nonsense I can't be bothered to fully learn. Of course all of his prophesies are dependent on war, so he preaches and writes and gives interviews encouraging preemptive war with Iran.

Worst of all, his theology is that which 99% of practicing Christians would instantly reject. Watch here as he openly claims Jesus Christ DID NOT come to Earth to be the messiah. And this is a man who is shaping the politics of the Christian Right. And endorsing Mike Huckabee.

You might be wondering what any of this Hagee business has to with Mike Huckabee. Well Hagee's publisher and long time friend Stephen Strang is directly linked to Huckabee. Just before fall Strang's magazine The New Man endorsed Huckabee. Likewise, Huckabee added Strang to his Faith and Values Coalition, an event for which John Hagee was in attendance. Strang has written and supported Hagee's threat's to Iran.

The Huckster sounds eerily like Hagee in this interview with Wolf Blitzer making the case to first starve the children and poor in Iran in the same way we did to Iraq inbetween Iraq Wars I & II, then using a preemptive nuclear strike to bomb Iran into compliance with his will. Of course all this tough talk of preemptive war against Iran sounds altogether more frightening with the NIE report that came out recently saying that Iran has long abandoned it's nuclear program. Imagine what a preemptive strike would have done to our country's security and prosperity if Huck and Hagee had their way already.

EDIT

http://scottbob.blogspot.com/2007/12/mike-huckabee-claims-hes-ordained-by.html

Mike Huckabee stirred up the faithful at a mega-church in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday, preaching to a congregation of 10,000 evangelical Christians who gave him a superstar welcome, including a 30 second standing ovation, and plenty of applause for his refusal to apologize for invoking Jesus’ name in a recent Christmas ad.

The former Arkansas governor and current Republican frontrunner in the Republican presidential primary race said he wasn’t appearing in a political capacity at Cornerstone Church, which boasts 25,000 members, but he wasn’t shy to discuss the latest advertisement and accompanying controversy.

The ad, airing in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, shows Huckabee in close-up while the camera pans left past a bookshelf and a a Christmas tree. In the ad, he asks: “Are you about worn out by all the television commercials you’ve been seeing, mostly about politics? Well, I don’t blame you. At this time of year sometimes it’s nice to pull aside from all of that and just remember that what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and friends.”

EDIT

But Huckabee’s appearance at the church undoubtedly brought with it an undercurrent of a man seeking the approval of influential opinion-makers. Cornerstone is run by evangelical leader Pastor John Hagee, frequently a spokesman for the 50-million strong movement. Hagee, a well-known defender of Israel, has received criticism from the Catholic League for statements he’s made about the Catholic Church’s connection to the Nazis in World War II Germany. “I want to thank your pastor, Pastor Hagee, for having me here today. (He is) one of the great Christian leaders of our nation,” Huckabee said. Huckabee, who’s returning to his home for the holiday before getting back on the trail ahead of the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, warmed up the crowd with his trademark jokes, and recounted how when he first ran, a woman approached him and said, You’re one of those Baptists who thinks you’re the only one going to heaven. Huckabee said he replied, No ma’am, I am Baptist but I don’t think of a lot of them are getting in either. While press cameras weren’t allowed into the church, FOX News spotted at least six cameras operated by church officials who broadcast the services. The large orchestra style band accompanied a 40 person choir. Huckabee finished his speech by noting that those who believe in Jesus won’t have to worry about the current events of today.

I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that.

And I suppose that neighboring St. Bernard Parish (county), nearly all of which flooded to the rooftops and which votes 2-1 repuke, had "a level of sin that was offensive to God", too. :sarcasm:

35. Oh, I almost forgot...
...the epicenter of New Orleans sin, Bourbon Street, did not flood at all. Not one inch. Meanwhile, across town in the Gentilly neighborhood, the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary flooded to the rooftops. There goes that theory... the fundies have been harping on this at least since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. A saying at the time went, "If, as they say, God struck the town for being over-frisky, why did He burn the churches down but spare Hotaling's whisky?"

But it matters less because a openly dominionist party is called a pertinent minority party.

And even if he isn't one of them, the republicans are going for a split anyways. Does anyone think the Martha's Vineyard crowd will stick around once they realize that Paulists, Fundies and Mormons are calling the shots? I doubt it.

20. The Christian Coalition was Dominonist. They had a big impact on
US politics. Pat Robertson wanted America's government to reflect the Massachusetts Bay Colony system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_Bay_Colony

The first revolution was complete: a trading company had become a representative democracy. By 1641, the colony had added its first code of laws, the Massachusetts Body of Liberties, written by Nathaniel Ward, based partly on John Cotton's draft (Abstract of the Laws of New-England, As They Are Now Established), which specified required behavior and punishments by appeal to the Judeo-Christian social sanctions recorded in the Bible. It is worthy of note that these men did not see any tension between the kind of theocracy they advocated and the type of democracy that was taking shape; to the contrary, they even held that the one required the other. For example: "All magistrates are to be chosen. Deut. 1:13, 17, 15. First, by the free . Secondly, out of the free ." Indeed, the first person to be executed in the colony was Margaret Jones, a female physician accused of being a "witch". A delusional Dorothy Talbye was hanged in 1638 for murdering her daughter, as at the time Massachusetts's common law made no distinction between insanity (or mental illness) and criminal behavior. John Winthrop wanted the puritan colony to be a "city upon a hill" or an example of their faith for other colonies to follow.

45. Don't Bet On It
The neocons will let the Huckster become President as long as they control him. For that they have bribery and blackmail.

They'd be OK with a theocracy as long as they were not personally subject to its rules. The more repressive the better to keep the people in line.

They wouldn't live under the theocracy, they would live above it, like the sheikhs in Saudi Arabia.

There's not an honest man in the bunch. They each seem to be obsessed with one thing at the expense of all others. Giuliani has temporarily switched obsessions from 9/11 to "tax cuts", but he still talks about only one thing at a time. The Huckster is all like GodGodGodJesusGodGod. McCain is all about fear and "100 years in Iraq".

Gee, Romney's scheme of having no principles at all is starting to look pretty smart!

49. Could he cause a rift in the party between the theocrats and the
corporatist? Could that be what Bloomberg thinks is going to happen? Could that be why Huckabee would trigger his entrance into the race?

57. FUCK HUCKABEE!
I don't think he has a chance in hell, and if he did get in I think America would surely and completely be gone.

I know I'd leave the country.

I'm sick of the so called "Christians" thinking they can control the U.S. It's time to put a stop to them either by legislation or more drastic means.

58. they will lead the GOP into oblivion
Fuckabee had no chance in hell of winning. He leads a group of primitive un evolved intellectually defunct followers who are completely divorced from reality and modern society. History will look back on evangelicals asa total embarrassment to the world

59. Huckabee winning would be a gift to whoever the Democratic candidate will be
There appears to be a backlash within the GOP against the perceived Christian Right takeover. It would mean that secular Republicans would stay home or reluctantly vote Democratic or third party, and independents would heavily break for the Democrats.

61. yeah...lead it to its downfall
As much as the evangelical crowd may have influence within the party...the rest of the party's members are not necessarily onboard for the Christian agenda. They can become a minority, religious conservative party, and alienate the other conservatives into other parties. So go ahead...fracture the GOP...and let the Dems win.
