LOS ANGELES – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday joined a growing list of California officials urging Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to keep the state's bases open when considering which military installations will be closed next year.
"My commitment ... is to ensure that California's current military sites, and the resulting resident intellectual capital and logistic infrastructure around each base, remain and prosper in California," Schwarzenegger wrote in a letter to Rumsfeld.
The governor argued anything that hurts California's economy – such as the jobs lost from closing bases – would hurt the nation's economy as well. Also, the state is home to many companies and individuals responsible for high-tech innovations, making it an ideal location for military installations, he said.
Last month, a letter signed by more than 40 of the state's 55 members of Congress was sent to Rumsfeld, asking him to consider factors that weigh against closing bases in California.
