Ottawa seeks trade sanctions against U.S.

Ottawa is asking for the green light to retaliate against the United States for failing to repeal a U.S. law that lets domestic companies keep the proceeds from anti-dumping duties.

In announcing a request for “retaliatory authorization” to the World Trade Organization along with seven other members, Ottawa is moving to prevent the $1.7-billion (U.S.) in softwood duties collected to be paid out to U.S. producers

The trade body had ruled earlier last year that the so-called Byrd Amendment didn't confirm with trade laws and had given Washington until late December to repeal it.

“It is our view that it effectively provides a distorting double advantage to U.S. industry and, if left in place, could lead to billions of dollars in Canadian-paid duties being handed over to U.S. companies,” International Trade Minister Jim Peterson said.

“I call upon the U.S. to preserve the integrity of the global trading system by moving expeditiously to repeal the Byrd Amendment.”

May god have mercy on your souls if he decides you have oil up around the Artic Circle and a good supply of natural gas and hydroelectric power. Wait a minute, 1/6 to 1/3 of the imported oil in the U.S. comes from Canada, half of the hydroelctric power produced in Canada is sold to the U.S. and we have been told here in the States that Canada has not been able to keep up with the U.S. demand for natural gas so we will be having shortages.

On second thought he will pre-emptively strike you, so I would think twice about any sanctions against the U.S. I realize we only have 1/5 of our military not tied up in a conflict somewhere, but since when has something like that stopped the idiot?

4. The US is already mooching our oil.

The Canadian waters in the Arctic are wide open. American oil companies can set up all the rigs they want and drill happily away, because there's not a damn thing we can do to stop them. Even if we could spare enough boats to patrol the area, our navy used up all its ammunition firing warning shots at Spanish turbot poachers.

5. Hit 'em where they can still feel it.

Of course, a trade embargo against the US won't be any more effective than the one that's been in place against Cuba for the last age. If the flow of money into the US suddenly decreases, it's the people dependent on public funds (i.e. just about everybody except the ones running the show) who will suffer for it; damned if the neocons will let it affect one penny of their own reserves.
