But with Rezko now locked up in a downtown federal jail, any delay in the trial would extend his stay there. Rezko was arrested at his home in Wilmette at daybreak Monday. St. Eve ordered him jailed until his trial after prosecutors raised concerns that the Syrian native would flee overseas and alleged he had concealed a $3.5 million payment from Lebanon.

Rezko and his attorney, Joseph J. Duffy, discussed delaying the trial for a few moments in a courtroom lockup Thursday morning during a status hearing. Duffy then told the court his client did not want the trial postponed.

In fact, Duffy said, his newly incarcerated client would like to see the trial date moved up.

"Sooner?" said St. Eve, sounding slightly surprised.

"Yes," Duffy said.
