House votes to study school voucher bill

CONCORD, N.H. -- The House has voted to study a school voucher program instead of implementing it now.
The Education Committee had recommended studying the issue after its members could not reach consensus. After a brief debate, the House agreed, 233-118, to authorize more study.
Rep. Kenneth Weyler, R-Kingston, the bill's prime sponsor, appealed in vain to the House to approve a voucher plan immediately. Weyler and other supporters said studying the idea would mean delaying implementation for a year or longer.
They proposed creating a voucher program using public funding to pay for a child to attend private school.
"Look at how cheaply we can make long distance phone calls. Why are we so fearful of competition?" he said.
