Court Won't Block Texas Redistrict Plan (Supreme Court refuses)

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court refused Friday to block a hard-fought Republican redistricting plan in Texas that could cost Democrats as many as six seats in Congress.

The justices will announce later this year whether they will consider an appeal from congressional Democrats and others who claim the map dilutes minority voting strength. In the meantime, they rejected an emergency appeal that sought to stop the state from using the new boundaries in this year's elections.

The districts were approved by the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature in a special session following months of partisan bickering, highlighted by two out-of-state walkouts by Democrats.

No matter who the Dem nominee is, we have all got to get together to defeat bush*. This country has gone to hell and we have this Rhenquist Supreme Court helping drive it down the tubes.

2. I will boycott my congressional district primary
Edited on Fri Jan-16-04 03:58 PM by bluestateguy
I will not legitimize the district boundaries by participating in the primary. I will leave that part of the ballot blank. My new district is a safe (D) district anyway, so I have that luxury.

Also, if the TX legislature raises my sales taxes in the upcoming special session, I am out of this state. I am a blue state guy.

22. Raise your taxes?
Are you kidding? Now if you depend on any kind of government service, you WILL get screwed. But the entire point of the special session is to deal with school finance, and the repubs want to cut property taxes and cut even *more* social service programs to do so. (check out the latest Texas Observer article about the special session- some yahoo from Arlington thinks he can cut property taxes by 80%!!! but still cut enough in services spending to *increase* school funding!)

But I'd be verrry surprised if this Lege voted to increse any tax- even the regressive sales tax.

3. Mono-culture Politics
Do you think that one-party rule is good America? Keeping on its present course we'll find out what the future holds under Neo-Conism.

One final comment: It won't be what you expected and when you realize it, it will be toooooooo late.

12. The last gasp of the plantation aristocracy.
The GOP power grab is unsustainable. Within a decade this state will be over 50% hispanic. Then they will need apartheid to hold power. Call me an optimist, but I don't think even Karl Rove could sell that.

Looks like we are going to be the minority in the House for at least another 8-10 years. Future does not look good for progressives.

17. Don't be such a downer.
It only took FDR 2 years to clear out the toadies last time. Of course we had a lot more misery to motivate the voters. I wonder how much misery we will have to have this time?

Misery hurts and if you want to expedite it, you need to rethink your priorities.

28. sooo....
I went to most of the redistricting hearings. At one, somebody asked if elections would matter anymore, and I-think-it-was-Craddick said, the primaries will matter.

I don't believe this really, because Republicans don't seem to have real primaries; as near as I can tell, the candidates are selected by Karl Rove at a Skull and Bones ceremony where they sacrifice some chickens.

But should those of us in safe Republican districts vote in the Republican primaries? That's likely to be as close to "democracy" as I can get.

Nevermind, we have touchscreen voting.

to send this to them. Was there ever any doubt how it would go?
Is there ever any doubt anymore how every single issue or debate goes?

I fucking want to give up and join a co-op someplace for a while.
